Men's College Lacrosse

Mike Coffey, a Denison University freshman from Manhasset, has earned his first varsity letter with the Denison men's lacrosse team. A 1997 graduate of Chaminade High School, Coffey was an attackman on the Big Red squad. His team finished the season with a 7-6 record and a second place 4-1 ledger in the North Coast Athletic Conference. They also received an invitation to the NCAA Championship tournament as the 11th-ranked team in Division III.

Goaltender on the University of Massachusetts' lacrosse team, senior John Kasselakis was third in the nation in goals against average (7.31) and was fourth in save percentage (.633) in 1997. John has finished the year fifth on the UMass career saves list with 456. He was also the pre-season second team All-American pick by College Lacrosse USA. Jon Kasselakis is a promising athlete who comes from Manhasset.

Tim Goettelmann, a sophomore at Loyola College and also from Manhasset, is the attackman for the Loyola College men's lacrosse team. He had a big post-season last year, recording 6 goals and 2 assists in two games. He also had 4 goals and 2 assists when they played Notre Dame. The 1998 Loyola men's lacrosse team won more regular-season games than any team in the school's history since Tim has been on the team

Sophomore, James Murtha of Manhasset was a goalie on the 1998 Hobart College lacrosse team. He was also a member of the Statesmen lacrosse team that ended the season with an 8-5 record and a first ever invitation to the Division I NCAA Lacrosse tournament.

Glen Manjos, a senior at Hamilton College is also from Manhasset. He was the goalie on the 1998 Hamilton College Men's lacrosse team which finished the season with a 5-10 record. Manjos played in 11 games and had a 3-7 record with a 12.99 goals against average. He had 103 saves on the season, and a .537 save percentage.

Georgetown University sophomore Greg Papa is a Manhasset High School graduate majoring in finance. On the playing field, he grabbed six ground balls and played in eleven games as a reserve defenseman in his freshman year. Greg is guaranteed to see plenty of quality playing time on the field in the 1998 season.

Junior John Siris of Glen Head, scored his first collegiate goal of the season against Lafayette. He is attending Bucknell University where he aided the Bucknell Men's lacrosse team in finishing the season at 6-8. He is the son of Michael Siris of Plandome.

Mike Ferrari, a 1998 Manhasset High School graduate, has been chosen to be a part of the United States Men's 19-and-Under lacrosse team, which will defend its World Championship in Australia in 1999. The U.S. Team has won the past three Championships, claiming the last title in Tokyo. Mike is a Manhasset resident who will be attending Duke University in the fall.

Jim Regan, a member of the North team, made one goal this year to aid his team in the 1998 National Boys North-South Lacrosse All-Star game. The game is one of six lacrosse matches held as a part of the 1998 Ohio Lacrosse Classic and was the feature event. Jim is a student from Chaminade and a resident of Manhasset.

Dickinson College sophomore, Jeff Runge, earned his second letter as a member of the College men's lacrosse team this season. He was a defender for the Red Devils who won the team's Buonocore award, given to an underclasman who has demonstrated exceptional ability on the defensive end of the field and tremendous leadership at all times. As a result, he will wear jersey number 5 next season, in honor of John Buonocore, the award's namesake, who was killed by terrorists at the Rome airport while studying abroad during his junior year in 1986. Runge picked up 94 ground balls this season, which is the seventh-best single-season total in school history. Jeff is a Manhasset resident and graduate of Manhasset High School.

College Frisbee

Brown University junior, Jon LaRosa, recently competed in the College National Ultimate Frisbee Championships. Brown entered the tournament ranked 7th in the US and soon earned a place in the semi-finals. Jon is a 1996 Manhasset High School graduate and will be the captain of the Frisbee team next year.

College Baseball

Seton Hall University has named student, Marc Racioppo to the 1997-98 Big East Academic All-Star Team. He is one among 88 Seton Hall students who have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 throughout their academic year and earned a varsity letter in a Big East sport, his being baseball. Marc is also a Manhasset resident.

Local Baseball

Johnny Avanzino of Manhasset, was named MVP of the St. Paul's Angels with a batting average of .700, including eight doubles and the only home runs in his division (2). He led the Angels to the 10 and under championship at the Star-Ledger News 12 New Jersey Memorial Baseball Classic played from May 23 to 25 in Oakland, NJ. The St. Paul's team was undefeated and also won the championship against Our Lady of Grace of Brooklyn.
