Cablevision to Buy Local Theaters
Less than a year ago, The Clearview Cinema Group, which is based in Chatham, NJ, bought the Manhasset Theater from United Artists. It also acquired theaters in Baldwin, New Hyde Park, Port Washington, Great Neck, Franklin Square, Roslyn and Babylon. Now Clearview Cinema Group, Inc., will be acquired by Cablevision Systems.

Gulotta, Parola Challenge LIRR
Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta and Nassau County Comptroller Fred Parola announced on Aug. 10 that they are withholding $25.2 million in station maintenance and operating subsidy payments to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) until service improves. LIRR commuters have been subjected to an unprecedented litany of late, overcrowded and poorly air-conditioned trains since the start of the summer season.

Sports Shorts
Mike Coffey, a Denison University freshman from Manhasset, has earned his first varsity letter with the Denison men's lacrosse team. A 1997 graduate of Chaminade High School, Coffey was an attackman on the Big Red squad. His team finished the season with a 7-6 record and a second place 4-1 ledger in the North Coast Athletic Conference. They also received an invitation to the NCAA Championship tournament as the 11th-ranked team in Division III.

The Awards Ceremony for MBYC's Annual Race Week Regatta on Sunday, Aug. 16, was a happy one. There was a welcome comfortable breeze, unfortunately too late for Sunday racing. But, as there had been good racing on Friday and Saturday, people were satisfied. Number of competitors: 101.
