On May 17, Lisa Scansaroli was awarded the Grand Prize in the category of Fiction by The Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center of Nassau County in the Third Annual Literary competition on the dangers of prejudice. The theme of the competition was "From Prejudice to Genocide." Also, Diane Tcholakian won an Honorable Mention in the Poetry category. The Center has published a booklet of the exceptional works and it is available at The Center's shop.

Emily Eilerman, daughter of Manhasset's Donna and Robert Eilerman, will be one of 48 participating in the Women in the Sciences and Engineering Week program at Penn State's University Park campus. She is currently in the eleventh grade at Manhasset High School.

Daniela Bracchi of Manhasset, was awarded the top prize in the Junior Division of the Seventh International Piano Competition held recently. This pianist was the winner of a $2,000 first prize. Being no stranger to the winner's circle, she has won over five competitions in the past three years.

Kristina Anne Doyle, daughter of Robert and Madeleine Doyle of Flower Hill, Manhasset, received a BA degree with a double major in physics and art history/studio art from Bucknell University on May 23, 1998. She was inducted into the national physics honor society, Sigma Pi Sigma.

Maggie Lemerise, daughter of Susan and Joseph Lemerise of Manhasset, received her B.A. degree from Western Maryland College, on May 23.

Donna Lipavulo received her degree from Muhlenburg College this past June. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lipavulo of Manhasset.

Marybeth Collins of Manhasset, has been named to the dean's list for the Spring 1998 semester at Lehigh University.

Margaret Gallagher of Port Washington, received an associate in arts degree from Keene State College on May 17.

Kristen Morrissey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Morrissey of Manhasset, graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee on May 17.

Jaime Ellen Barone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barone, is currently attending Saint John's University and has been chosen as one of the country's most outstanding campus leaders. She was selected based on her academic activities and potential for continued success and will be listed in the 1998 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, an annual directory of outstanding students printed since 1934.

Christina Vasilia Pappas of Manhasset, was named to the Dean's commendation list for this past semester at Gettysburg College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold N. Pappas.

William James Michels is the son of Drs. Harold and Corinne Michels of Manhasset. He has just received a master's of business administration degree, with honors, from Columbia University. He also holds a bachelor of arts degree with a major in geology from Colby College.William will be working at SBC Warburg Dillon Reed in the equity analysis group with an industry focus on telecommunications. He is also a 1989 graduate of Manhasset High School.

Daniel Bellissimo earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications/history from Albright College. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Bellissimo of Manhasset and is a graduate of Manhasset High School.

Navy Ensign Derek G. Solon recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, receiving a bachelor of science degree with a major in economics. He is a 1994 Manhasset High School graduate.

Allen Feldman of Manhasset has recently been appointed director of human resources at the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc.

Linda H. Hughs of Manhasset Middle School in Manhasset, was appointed as a regional judge for the 1998 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. This nationally recognized writing competition commends high school seniors for excellence in writing and recommends them to universities and colleges for admission.

The Volunteer Sphere

The Theodore Roosevelt Council, Boy Scouts of America, has announced that John Adamovich Jr. of Manhasset has been re-elected as president of its board of directors. Mr. Adamovich is group vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer of Pall Corporation in East Hills. The council has also announced that John T. Imperiale of Manhasset has been elected to its board of directors. He will serve as district chairman of the Shelter Rock District of the council. Mr. Imperiale is sales and operations manager for Xerox Business Services in Woodbury.

The Theodore Roosevelt Council serves 16,000 youth throughout Nassau County and is a participating member of the United Way of Long Island and Community Funds of Garden City, Great Neck and Manhasset.
