Stephen S. Rand of Plandome died on June 24, 1998. He is survived by his beloved wife, Josephine, and his children, Rita, Stanley, John and Joseph and by nine grandchildren. Mr. Rand was a Charter Member of the Manhasset Post of the Veteran Wars and a member of the Manhasset Post of the American Legion.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, June 26, at St. Mary's R. C. Church in Manhasset followed by interment in the Calverton National Cemetery.
Frances M. Rose, long-time resident of Manhasset passed away at her home on June 10. Rose was an active local realtor for over 30 years having worked at Ernest G. Blaich & Co. and Spruce Realty. Upon her retirement she enjoyed played bridge with her many friends at North Hempstead Country Club. Rose was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Archibald von K. Rose. She is survived by her children Charles S. Rose and Jean R. Fenlon; by her grandchildren Claudia B. Rose and Gregory R. Babowal and his wife Holly; by her son-in-law John P. Fenlon and by close friend Alex Borynack.
Margaret Duffy Spellman died on June 23, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital after a brief illness. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Damian. She is survived by her children, Ann Kuhn of Port Washington and Michael Spellman of Lloyd Harbor; by her grandchildren Michael, Kevin, Brendan and Sean Spellman and Kieran Kuhn. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Mary W. Duffy of Dunmore, PA and Julia Spellman of Manhattan and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Spellman was an officer and board member of the Manhasset Community Club, St. Peter of Alcantara Guild, officer and board member and volunteer of the St. Francis Hospital Guild and founding member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary League in Manhasset.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home in Port Washington. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, June 27, at St. Peter of Alcantara Church with interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
Harry Boyden Hazelton, Jr., a former councilman for the Town of Hilton Head Island, died peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 1998 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was 83 and a resident of TidePointe.
Harry, known affectionately as Hazy, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and was the son of the late Harry Boyden Hazelton and Lucille Picton Bernard Hazelton. He was a 1932 graduate of St. Louis Country Day School and a 1936 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He served as a lieutenant in the US Navy in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. After the war, he joined The Imperial Knife Company in New York, where he worked until retiring in 1977 as director of corporate planning.
During his professional career, Hazy was an active volunteer in community affairs. He was elected to the board of the Village of Plandome, and was mayor of Plandome for several years.
In 1977, he and his wife, the late Elizabeth Windell Hazelton, moved to Hilton Head Island and were actively involved with the Community Theater and The First Presbyterian Church. In 1983, Hazy joined the "Committee for Incorporation" of the town of Hilton Head Island. He was elected as "Councilman at Large" in August of 1983, and served in the first administration for over two years. Hazy was remembered fondly by Ben Racussen, the first mayor of Hilton Head Island, "as a valuable member and advisor to the committee and mayor" during that challenging first term.
Hazy was married for 53 years to Elizabeth Windell Hazelton, who passed away on May 24. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Frances Hazelton of Oregon and Barbara Bon de Sousa Pernas of Portugal; a brother, John Sanford Hazelton of New Mexico; two daughters, Lila Vultee of Maine and Susan Hilpert of Washington; two sons, John Douglas Hazelton of Delaware and James Boyden Hazelton of Hilton Head Island; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on June 27 at 10 a.m. for both Harry and Elizabeth Hazelton at The First Presbyterian Church, Hilton Head Island.
