Although if there is one thing graduates don't need at this time of the year is advice, still graduation speakers and editorial writers feel that the occasion should not pass without such words of wisdom as they can manage. In a world that we adults all see as fraught with danger from the unexpected and in a natural desire to protect our young adults, until recently our children, we tend to offer words of caution--words that usually fall on deaf ears. But, as early feminist and suffragette Susan B. Anthony said: "Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their reputation and social standing, never can bring about a reform. Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world's estimation."
That's why it is interesting to see the title of Manhasset High School's 1998 yearbook--Making Waves , and its suggestion, "Don't just float through life, make waves." It is this spirit that will speed the graduates on their way to make a better world than the one they inherited. It is the spirit of the late Dr. Seuss when he told his readers, "Oh, the places you'll go!." As we wish them Godspeed and Bon Voyage, we remind them, in the words of the historian, Edward Gibbon, that " the winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators."
