Registration for the Girls' Basketball Program for the Fall of 1998 will take place this Saturday, June 13, at Immaculata Hall, St. Mary's High School from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. CYO has changed registration from September to June so it is imperative that all girls in grades 4 through 12 who are interested in participating in our basketball program in the Fall come to register. It is necessary that we have the full cooperation of all involved to make a smooth transition. The fee is $60 and a check can be made out to St. Mary's CYO.

After 20 years of coordinating the Girls' CYO program at St. Mary's, I am retiring. Volunteers are needed to coordinate the program in the future. As the program has grown so much in the past years, it might be beneficial for a different person to head up each program: basketball, basketball intramurals, volleyball and softball. Anyone interested in volunteering their time should call Joan Collins at 365-7968.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the priests, nuns, principals, secretaries, coaches and parents who have been so supportive over the last 20 years. Our program has grown by leaps and bounds and it is a credit to everyone involved that it has become so successful. There are more than 400 girls presently involved in different aspects of the program. I would hope that all coaches remember that, even though you sacrifice a tremendous amount of your time and it is greatly appreciated, you are doing it for the children and for the love of the children. I would also hope that all parents realize that these coaches are not professionals and that they are, indeed, sacrificing their free time to coach your daughters. Without these dedicated people the program would not exist.

The most important award a team can win in the CYO program is the Sportsmanship Award and I am proud to say that many teams in St. Mary's have won this award over the years.

I wish everyone Godspeed and every success in the future.

Joan Collins

CYO Coordinator
