The Manhasset Chamber of Commerce has undergone a renaissance in the past few years. Its presence is seen in the bulbs planted around the gazebo, in the Adopt-a-Pole program as well as in its continued sponsorship of the Christmas wreaths and other holiday decorations in Manhasset. The Chamber officers have varied the meeting places to attract new members to attend at times more convenient for their business hours. The Chamber of Commerce established the Manhasset web site which receives a surprising number of "hits" every week.
The latest venture was the brainchild of the current president, Betsy Chesebrough, who, with her husband, Charlie, owns O'Connell Real Estate. This is the Chamber's first golf outing to be held at the new Harbor Links Golf Course. There will not be too many golf outings permitted at Harbor Links because the first priority will be the opportunity for individual golfers to have the opportunity to play. The Letters to the Editor column in this newspaper has received a number of letters concerning the fees that will be charged and, at least one, that from Robert Furlong in last week's paper, with an interesting suggestion for the amelioration of those fees for local residents. As we toured the course with Commissioner of Parks Olsen last week, we mentioned Mr. Furlong's suggestions. Commissioner Olsen said that the course operators will charge the fees previously published, at least for the first season. "We'll learn as we go along," he said, adding that the course was not selling memberships this first season because the town hopes that all golfers who want to play will get a chance. Commissioner Olsen did not rule out the possibility of a change as the course is in operation for a longer time.We would like to suggest that participating in the Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing might be a way for golfers to get an early look at the course and to give a boost to a local organization that has the best interests of Manhasset at heart.
