The Manhasset Chamber of Commerce will hold its first golf outing and the first golf outing at the brand new Town of North Hempstead Harbor Links Golf Course on Monday, July 27. The course is expected to be open to the public in mid-July. On Thursday, June 4, Gerard Olsen, North Hempstead's Parks Commissioner, gave a tour of the course to Betsy Chesebrough, president of the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce, Charlie Chesebrough and Brian Jennings, co-chairmen of the golf outing, and the Manhasset Press.

The course lives up to advanced prediction in its beauty and playability. Due to some 40,000 pounds of compost which was added to the soil and tilled in to a depth of a foot the greens are already in excellent condition, the fairways are rolling and even the intermediate rough looks good. Along the edges of the fairways native grasses have been permitted to thrive and they add to the beauty of the course. According to the commissioner, the course, which has five tee boxes on some holes, runs the gamut from the championship level to what he calls "user friendly." The course uses the latest techniques and advances in grasses and computerized sprinkler system. Captured rainfall water is collected in a re-charge basin that holds seven million gallons of water, which means the course will be irrigated without interfering with the Port Washington Water District's water supply.

The cost of the Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing is $150 per person. It includes continental breakfast, a box lunch, awards and a special souvenir of this new golf course. There will be four hole-in-one prizes sponsored by Syosset Ford and they should make all golfers sit up and take notice. The first is a car which will be on the course for all golfers to see and receive inspiration, next is a pair of airline tickets to anywhere in the United States, next a five-day cruise and finally a set of new irons.Aside from the hole-in-one prizes there will be prizes for both men and women's longest drive and most accurate drive.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, rain or shine.
