For many years the Long Island Sound rivalry has existed between sailors from both sides of the Sound and many friendships have been formed. Last year Garrison Miller, a former Long Islander, now a resident of Darien, CT, thought it would be a good idea to extend that friendly rivalry to another sport, lacrosse. Last year's event was played at Darien High School and featured Darien versus Manhasset and New Canaan versus Garden City. Despite bad weather there were about 700 people in attendance. Eventually Darien went on to win Connecticut's state championship and Garden City to become New York's Class B champion.
This year the games will be played at Manhasset High School and founder Garrison Miller has hopes for attendance of about 2,000. Manhasset PAL fifth and sixth grade teams will begin the day at 9 a.m. and at 11 a.m. Garden City will face off against New Canaan. At 2 p.m. it will be Darien against Manhasset.
Manhasset is not the only venue of the April 18 games. Chaminade will play Fairfield Prep at Fairfield at 2 p.m.
According to Miller, "Having the best schools from Long Island play the best schools from Connecticut will generate a lot of excitement. Connecticut high school lacrosse is on the rise. There are also a lot of transplanted Long Islanders now living in Fairfield County. The Greenwich Youth Lacrosse program's coaching staff is almost entirely made of Long Islanders. It is headed up by Manhasset native Eugene Miller."
Miller also stresses the fact that the schools with great lacrosse programs are also excellent academic institutions. Observing that Manhasset and Garden City lacrosse players are sought after by lacrosse coaches from the best colleges, he says he wants to build a similar reputation for Connecticut high schools.
Next year the original four teams will switch matchups. Garden City will play Darien and New Canaan will play Manhasset. The game will take place at New Canaan's new stadium, probably on a Saturday night. Next year, for the first time, it is expected that the four schools' women's varsity lacrosse teams will be included in the excitement.
