Mrs. MacDonald, 93, had been the principal at Baker Hill School in Great Neck. Supervisor May Newburger recalled that her son, Peter, had gone to the school while Mrs. MacDonald was principal and that the principal would take the children bird watching before school began. "I'm not sure whether it was a treat or punishment, but I thought it was wonderful," Mrs. Newburger said. After her retirement, Mrs. MacDonald volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Manhasset Community Fund and the Visiting Nurses. Although in a wheelchair, Mrs. MacDonald seemed vigorous and was articulate in thanking the supervisor for her award.
Ruth Freeman, a Nassau County Police crossing guard, has been an active member of the Manhasset/Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council (EOC), a representative of Pond Hill Housing and a member of the North Hempstead Housing Authority.
As she has done every year, Great Neck resident actress Shirley Romaine gave a brief program. This year she chose to read from Stephen Leacock's short story, "How We Kept Mother's Day," a satirical piece that kept the audience laughing as the author's points struck home.
The day's special honorees were three young women. Joy Freeman, daughter of honoree Marlene Freeman of Roslyn, began a letter writing program between Roslyn students and students in Vietnam to help both understand one anothers' country. The program reached a climax when a group of the Vietnamese students came to Roslyn for a visit this past winter. Sarah Hughes of Great Neck is the nation's junior figure skating champion . Donna Muller of East Williston is a teenager who helps out at all the town's functions for senior citizens.
Also honored were Sara Jane Berman, Jane Brickman, Ann Coady, Jane D'Amico, Marlene Freeman, Sarah Hughes, Grace Jahn, Andrea Martone, Dorothy Miller, Tita Monti, Josephine November, Maria Cristina Pardo, Doris Salzberg, Dolores Sedacca, Duffy Spencer, Frances Terry, De nise Van Wallendael and Patti Vunk.
