Last Saturday's horrid weather did not deter the grade five Manhasset Mustangs of the Long Island Junior Soccer League. The Manhasset side played game one at Shelter Rock field against league rival East Meadow. The home team trailed 0-2 into the last 15 minutes when striker Matt Donoghue took the ball and made a pretty run to score an unassisted goal. Now down one goal, Manhasset was relentless as Paul Webber and Mike Sama hustled to set up another scoring activity with less than five minutes left. After receiving a nifty cross, Matt was fouled and was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Striker Donoghue deposited the ball in the upper corner for the equalizer. The frozen spectators celebrated and the Mustangs came away with a hard earned point.
Due to the previous week's postponement, the Mustangs took a short break and returned to their home field to play a Waldbaum's Challenge match against the South Huntington Bulldogs. As the match proceeded the rain, wind, sleet and snow increased. At the half, Manhasset was tied again at one. The wet and tired Manhasset players pressed on and broke through early in the second half. A total team effort lifted the squad with a four goal second half outburst that propels the Mustangs into the second round of the Long Island-wide tournament. Selfless play set up a varied attack, Paul Webber notched a goal and a deft assist to Matt Donoghue. Mike Sama scored on a penalty kick and Joaquin de Rojas rounded out the scoring. During the long afternoon, Cullen Molinari and Chris Zuar were very tough turning away opposing strikers repeatedly. Goalkeepers Chris Duffy and Chris Finn played well. The midfield play of Brian Nelson, Mike Sama and Tommy Kaminsky kept the ball in the opposing end for most of the game.
