Additional chairs had to be unfolded to accommodate the number of community members who attended the February meeting of the board of trustees of the Manhasset Public Library. The report in the Jan. 22 issue of the Manhasset Press concerning the offer of North Hills Mayor John Lentini to contribute to the acquisition of a property for a new joint library for Manhasset and North Hills, sparked renewed interest in the prospect of improved library facilities. Audience members expressed their strong feelings concerning the inadequacy of the present library and sought more information concerning Mayor Lentini's proposal.

The trustees explained that the proposed plan is still in its preliminary phase. The availability of the proposed site has to be confirmed and the necessary funding must be in place. Alternatives to the proposed plan were put forward, with the trustees describing present considerations to expand and refurbish the existing building. A further suggestion was made from the audience that the trustees revisit the plan for the Christ Church site.

Frances Bourguet, president of the board of trustees, slated, "One thing is very clear: The only way library expansion can become a reality is with strong community support.

The Board of Trustees is unified in its commitment to keep the residents of Manhasset included in the process that lies ahead."

Manhasset Library Director Marian Robertson added, "There will be ongoing progress reports in the Manhasset Press, and the library's newsletter and mailing. We want the community to be involved from the onset in the growth of their library."

There were numerous offers from the audience to work with the board to seek the best solution for improved library services. Frances Bourguet concluded, "Together we can make it happen." The community is invited to attend the next board meeting on Monday, March 16, at 8 p.m.
