School Days

George Sarlanis, a Shelter Rock sixth grader, has been selected to play for the 1998 Long Island Junior Soccer League Select Program. George has been playing soccer for Manhasset since he was 4 years old and has played for many teams both in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. He is presently playing for the Huntington Boys Club (HBS "Heat") a newly formed team which will be playing in Division I this spring.

Megan Bitter, a junior at the Holderness School in Plymouth, NH, has been named to that school's fall semester honor roll. This fall she also took part in the school's on-campus student jobs program and earned a varsity letter playing midfield on a girls' soccer team that reached the finals of the New England prep school championship tournament. Megan Bitter is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Ward Bitter of Manhasset.

The Armed forces

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Deborah A. Hinkley, daughter of Paul and Carol Hinkley of Manhasset, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal while assigned to Helicopter Anit-Submarine Squadron 40, home based in Jacksonville, FL.

Commander Hinkley served as the squadron flight surgeon. Hero aero-medical knowledge and crisis management skills were instrumental in the squadron exceeding 60,000 mishap-free flight hours while simultaneously providing support throughout space shuttle Columbia launches. She joined the Navy in June 1989 and currently serves at Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, FL.

The Business World

Susan Olsen has been promoted to Director of Marketing for Americana at Manhasset, the exclusive shopping center and flagship operation of Castagna Realty Company.

Olsen, active in the fashion, publishing and advertising industries for 20 years, joined Americana as Associate Director of Communications and Marketing in 1994. She will focus on Americana's fashion presentations, corporate sponsorship opportunities, grand openings, in-store events and personal appearances. She will also continue to work with new and existing tenants to further develop and maintain the image and standards that have made Americana at Manhasset one of the finest fashion/lifestyle shopping destinations in the world.

Ms. Olsen reports directly to Deidre Costa Major, vice president of Castagna Realty Company and Creative Director for Americana at Manhasset.

Our Philanthropic Neighbors

Angela Case of Manhasset has just graduated from a training program for hospice volunteers at the Comprehensive Community Hospice Program of Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation. The volunteers received certificates for the completion of 24 hours of training that covered topics important to hospice care. The volunteers will now assist terminally ill patients and their families.
