Mike Still Here to Help

I wanted to thank the voters and the volunteer campaign workers who supported my re-election to another term on the Manhasset Park District's Board of Commissioners. For the next three years, I look forward to working on behalf of all Manhasset's residents.

The Manhasset Park District (MPD) will continue in its role as an advocate for the community's LIRR commuters; custodian of its passive parks; and as a governmental agency committed to improving our quality of life, whether it be the creation of shopper parking on Plandome Road or the sponsorship of events such as the annual Tree-Lighting ceremony.

Let me also congratulate my opponent in last week's election, Harold Henrickson. He ran a hard-fought race and his candidacy prompted a spirited debate on the Manhasset Park District's role in the community.

In the meantime, I remain accessible to those with questions/comments about the MPD and can be reached via our office number: 627-7711. Once again, I appreciated the show of support on Dec. 9.

Decline the Application

(The following letter was sent to County Executive Thomas Gulotta and is printed here with the author's permission.)

Your office will be receiving an application for a driveway or curb cut at the entrance of the Strathmore Vanderbilt community on Old Shelter Rock Road. I urge you to decline the application on the basis that a driveway in this location would--as Jim Molloy has indicated in his recent editorial in the Manhasset Press --compromise the safety, quality of life and the rights of thousands of Strathmore Vanderbilt residents and visitors to our community.

Furthermore, I"m appalled at the landowner's audacity to begin the hideous excavation and clear cutting of hundreds of trees without first obtaining the county's approval of a viable plan for site access. I'm confused as to how that can happen. Shouldn't the contractor have assured himself that approval of the appropriate municipalities had been obtained before he began clearing trees and excavating soil? Is the Village of North Hills accustomed to approving the development of a site without taking into consideration access to and egress from the site. Shouldn't the Village of North Hills have satisfied themselves that Nassau County or the Town of North Hempstead had approved a plan for access before issuing an approval for the development of a single family residence at this location? What's going on anyway? It seems to me that somebody (maybe the county executive) should be having a conversation with the folks over at North Hills.

Until this matter is cleared up, excavation and construction at the site must be halted. I agree with Jim Molloy. It is unacceptable to proceed without a viable plan for site access.

(Ed. note: Town of North Hempstead Supervisor May Newburger told this newspaper that the Town Building Department had denied a permit for a curb cut before Mr. Molloy wrote his editorial in last week's newspaper.)

House Tour a Success

On behalf of the Sisters, faculty and families of Our Lady of Grace Montessori School, a heartfelt thank you to the families who very graciously opened up their beautiful homes for our Holiday House Tour fundraiser!

Because of the generosity of Lynn and Steven Leondis, Annalia and John Idol, Lori and Elliot Fleishhacker, Dorothy and Joseph Forte, Jeanne and Larry Ceriello and Patty and Richard Mattucci, the event was a huge success! On Dec. 9, more than 300 people delighted in their lovely homes decorated for the holidays, and enjoyed a delicious luncheon prepared by Elegant Affairs at Our Lady of Grace Convent.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who purchased tickets to the 1997 House Tour. Your support of our fund-raising efforts was vital, and we are very grateful. Merry Christmas!

A Shocking Theft

Over the past year, the Spanish Honor Society of Manhasset High School has been sponsoring a Penny Drive with the goal of making one million pennies. We placed cans in many stores along Plandome Road to try to reach our goal. Once we collected a million pennies, all of the money was to be donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Last June after school ended, someone broke the locks on our bank in the school and stole an estimated $300. We were horrified and discouraged by this outrageous act and our society has decided to abort the project, and give all the money we have collected thus far to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Although we really wanted to continue this worthy project, forces out of our control would not allow it. We want to thank all of the stores that participated in the project. We would especially like to thank the Manhasset Deli, whose patrons and even employees contributed the largest sum of money.

This million pennies project was truly a community effort. In addition to the money raised by the students at Manhasset High School, Shelter Rock and Munsey Park, and the Town of Manhasset, a very generous amount of $2,000 was donated by TDK. We would like to thank Mr. Ted Livesay for the TDK contribution.

Reluctantly, students have had to remove the cans from all the stores in which they were located. We are all appalled that someone would stoop so low as to steal from a charity. We would like to publicly thank all of the students and townspeople who worked so hard to try and make this project a success. The children of the Make-a-Wish Foundation will be the losers as a result of one person's immoral act.
