Obituaries

Joseph M. Jenkins

Mr. Joseph M. Jenkins, age 83, of Decatur, GA, formerly of Plandome, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997. Mr. Jenkins was a native of Lyon Co., Minn., and a vice president of the A.C. Nielson Co. until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Gainard. Mr. Jenkins was a graduate of Hamline University. He was predeceased by two wives, Mildred Louise Crabtree Smith in 1970 and Ruth Manning Smith Jenkins in 1984.

Graveside Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Somerset City Cemetery in Somerset, Kentucky. Rev. Bob Howell officiated. Mr. Jenkins is survived by daughters Dr. Annie Smith, Toronto, Ontario; Mrs. Barbara Konecky, San Francisco, CA; Ms. Jennifer Jenkins, Stone Mountain, GA; sons Neil Smith, Mill Valley, CA; Joseph M. Jenkins Jr., Greenville, SC; his sisters Mrs. Nancy Carlson, Seattle, WA; Mrs. Winnifred Clem, Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Alice Peterson, Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Orpha Goodhue, St. Paul, Minnesota; his brother John Jenkins of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren Daniel and Bronwen Konecky and Erin and Brittany Jenkins; several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may send contributions to the American Cancer Society.


Audrey J. Lufkin

Audrey J. Lufkin, 88, died peacefully at her home in Sands Point on Nov. 30, 1997.

The daughter of John and Mary Jordan, she was born in Toronto, Canada on Oct. 20, 1909. At an early age she moved with her family to Pasadena, CA and attended the University of Southern California where she studied English literature and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.

On April 14, 1939 she married her college sweetheart, George S. Lufkin, in the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. Mr. Lufkin was a founder of METCO, Inc., one of Long Island's first high tech companies which still operates in Westbury, NY.

She and her husband lived in Munsey Park in Manhasset, where she was active in school and community affairs. She was an early member of the Congregational Church of Manhasset. She was a member of the Munsey Park Women's Club. She was a member of Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and enjoyed her summers cruising Long Island waters on the Malua.

In 1972, she became a winter resident of Boca Raton, FL and a summer resident of Sands Point. She was also a member of Sands Point Golf Club and Royal Palm Yacht Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, George S. Lufkin and her son George R. Lufkin. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Peter C. Leverich of Manhasset, her grandchildren George S. Lufkin II and Walden H. Leverich III, Brian J. Lufkin and Audrey R. Leverich and by three great-granddaughters. She is also survived by her brother Jack R. Jordan of Pasadena, CA, her sisters, Dorothy Foote of Pasadena, CA and Joanne Farrar of Toronto, Canada.

A candlelight memorial service was held at 4 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Manhasset on Friday, Dec. 5, 1997. Reverend Maurice Fetty presided and Father Peter Lejacq delivered a tribute. Interment was at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington.
