The seventh grade Manhasset Wildcats recently completed their soccer season with a very strong 7-2 record. For the second season in a row, the team missed winning the division crown when they lost game number five in the final 20 seconds to Rockville Centre.
Everyone on the team contributed to the successful campaign, but the defense deserves special mention. It is the toughest position to play, and it generally doesn't get the recognition it deserves, but our team wouldn't be as successful without these players. Matt Bitter, Matt Lee, Kevin Cronin, Anthony Imbriano and Alex Horowitz anchored our defense all year. In goal, Christian Trunz and Rob Ryan were outstanding complementing each other.
Mike Connors, Kevin Keckeisen and Danny Nolan supplied most of the scoring, with Connors recording three "hat tricks," and Keckeisen scoring several spectacular goals. John Lawrence and Kevin Clemency were very effective in the striker role, scoring on occasion, and distributing the ball well on some very picturesque assists.
Finally, no one works as hard on both sides of the field as the halfbacks, and Tim Durkin, Paul Oleske and Denis Judge did well in this role. Denis scored on one bullet from 20 yards out with his left foot, and received a standing ovation from his teammates. Finally, and most importantly, Manhasset can be proud of these young athletes for their fine sportsmanship.
The second grade boys CYO "Strikers" team have ended their season with an impressive record, 6-3-1, with four of those victories occurring consecutively at the end of the season.
Time and again, they shut out their opponents with solid defensive plays by Peter Gallo, Ryan Brenner, Chris Musalo and Drew Keneally.
Excellent goal keeping by Tristan Miller and Paul Pate prevented many strong shots from scoring. The high-powered offensive unit driven by Billy Coughlin, Bradley Cohn and Chase Cotter was successfully assisted by strong midfielders Alex Grimes, William McIntosh, Anthony Loschiavo and Thomas Giordano.
The amazing speed and agility of Ryan Conway and Ryan Clark consistently set up, Stephen Laratro, whose quick footwork and precision often resulted in a score.
