Campaign Statement by Harold J. "Whitey" Henrickson

Why am I interested in a position as a park commissioner?

I've been regularly involved in many areas of this community as a concerned citizen. I believe that with an official position I can get more attention from town and county officials, civic associations, the Chamber of Commerce, the schools and state highway groups. I have found that when you speak as a lone citizen, these groups slide your letters and remarks into the "so what" file. There are many things that can be improved and I will certainly welcome suggestions. They will all be considered and evaluated for their content.

We cannot sit and let things go down hill until it is too late. Pessimists would suggest we keep the status quo. For example, I was very concerned about the Wright Hardware situation and the Wright family. When I saw the large crowd that showed up at the meeting in town hall, I was reminded of Manhasset's strength, the good people who stand up for what is right. There were only a few with different opinions.

I am running for office to represent the interests of the public. The triangle park on the corner of Shelter Rock Road was taken over some months ago from Nassau County. I called Tom Gulotta a few years ago and suggested he clean up the park. He followed up and recently turned it over to our park district.

Then there was the discussion about where to place the USS Manhasset monument. The Strathmore-Vanderbilt location did not work out and the circle drive adjacent to the Seventh Day Adventist property on Shelter Rock Road was not wanted. The present location, with its available parking, is a good solution. This recent effort also brought us the Plandome Road Commission. It was composed of all men until Dr. Marilyn Klainberg was added recently. Note that elections cause things to be taken care of.

This is only a reminder that I need your vote. Please be sure to vote on Tuesday, Dec. 9 between 5 and 9 p.m. at the firehouse on Bayview Avenue in Manhasset, next to the American Legion Hall. I need a big turnout as they tell me I don't have a chance. I hope to represent all of you in Manhasset.
