Benefit Shopping at Americana

Tree Lighting Ceremony
Manhasset Park District sponsors the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Plandome Road Bandstand, Plandome Road, Manhasset. The festivities get under way at 4:15 p.m. The afternoon will feature holiday music, free hot chocolate and doughnuts and the simultaneous lighting of the Christmas trees in front of North Hempstead Town Hall and at the Manhasset Rail Road station. Since Santa Claus traditionally makes an appearance at this event, hundreds of Manhasset children and their parents are also expected to attend.
Ralph Lauren Shopping Night
Manhasset Chapter of the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC) announces a cocktail party from 6 to 9 p.m. at the newly expanded Ralph Lauren store at The Americana. While you're socializing with your friends, shopping for Christmas or shopping for your home, you'll also be shopping for AHRC. Twenty percent of all receipts will be donated to the Manhasset Chapter of AHRC that evening. If you can't make it during the event, shop any time of the day and mention AHRC. It still counts.
Breakfast with Santa
Working Women of Manhasset (WWM) will sponsor their annual Breakfast with Santa at Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is $9 for adults and $6 for children (children under age 2 are free) and includes a buffet breakfast and one family photo with Santa. Additional photos are $1.50 each. The festivities will include children's games and prizes. Vendors will also be present so you can start your holiday shopping early.

The Nassau AHRC Greenhouse, 189 Wheatley Road, Brookville, opens for a special holiday sale on Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All varieties and colors of holiday plants, poinsettias, wreaths and decorative roping are for sale. The Greenhouse also offers decorative crafts, gift baskets, grave blankets and a wide selection of specialty trees which also make excellent gifts. The AHRC Greenhouse is a program of Nassau Association for the Help of Retarded Children which provides programs and services daily to 1,500 children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. The Great Neck Choral Society opens its 40th season with a program featuring Brahms' Zigeunerlieder at 3 p.m. in Great Neck South Middle School. Led by Bart Folse, the group will also perform Brahms' Taffellied, Kodaly's An Ode: The Music Makers and R.V. Williams' Serenade to Music as well as works by Handel, Elgar, Carter and Thompson. Christmas Around the World
The Manhasset Community Club ushers in the holiday season with "Christmas Around the World" presented by Martha and Doug Martin at noon at the Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran in Manhasset. The Martins are becoming nationally known for their Freedom Bells Connection programs. They have performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Recital Hall, St. Patrick's Cathedral, on cruise ships, as well as resorts, clubs, festivals and for corporations throughout the United States.
Free Treatment for High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol
Women and men with high cholesterol or high blood pressure are invited to participate in Long Island Jewish Medical Center's (LIJ) studies of new medications. Cholesterol study patients must be 21 and over. High blood pressure patients must be 65 or older. Volunteers will earn $300 for completing the studies. Eligible patients receive free medical examinations by a board certified physician including electrocardiograms and blood tests. Cholesterol monitoring and dietitian available to help reduce cholesterol levels. The programs are based at Manhasset Ambulatory Pavilion on Northern Boulevard. Sands-Willets House Tours
The National Register Sands-Willets House, headquarters of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society at 336 Port Washington Boulevard is open for guided tours of its 10 fully furnished rooms on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. The house will also be open for tours by appointment only. An admission fee of $2 per adult helps the society maintain the 1753 house, its 1600s Dutch barn and the grounds on which they stand. For further information call 365-9074. The National Register Sands-Willets House is owned and operated by the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society founded in 1962 to protect the historic buildings and grounds of the Cow Neck Peninsula and to preserve its history through the books which the society publishes and the exhibits/programs which it presents.
Manhasset Art Association
The Manhasset Art Association, MAA, has ongoing displays of art works at both the Dime Savings Bank and EAB in Manhasset. The exhibits change monthly.

Look Good, Feel Better
"Look Good...Feel Better" is a program sponsored by the American Cancer Society for women who are undergoing or are about to undergo cancer treatment. At North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, licensed cosmetologists will help the patients improve their appearance and self-image by showing them hands-on beauty techniques to overcome any possible appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Nassau County Art Museum
The Nassau County Art Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays.
The museum offers docent-led tours for individuals or families every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Each tour can accommodate up to 20 people. No reservations are required, but spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The tours are free with paid admission.
The museum also welcomes group tours from schools, camps or other community groups. Reservations for these tours must be made in advance. For prices and information, call 484-9338.
Raynham Hall Museum
