Liberty Ends Season on Winning Side

The fourth grade girls CYO finally had a chance to end their season on Sunday as the rain decided to stay away. The girls triumphed over St. Aidan's by a margin of 3-0. The game was never in doubt as the girls kept on the pressure throughout. If not for the timely goalkeeping of St. Aidan's, a rout would surely have occurred.

The cold and damp conditions did not keep out girls down as they played with great enthusiasm. Lisa Janik opened the scoring on a great pass from Cailinn Connolly as the ball was past the St. Aidan's goaltender before she had a chance. Lizzie Pond scored the second goal as the ball came free and was banged in for the score. Brigid Murphy scored her first goal of the year as she streaked down the sideline and put it past for the last goal.

Liberty goaltending again was strong as the combination of Paige Brown and Michelle LaRosa led the Liberty to their fourth shutout of the year. The girls this year took great pride in their defense, allowing only nine goals in nine games. Sarah Devenoge, Katherine Duvnjak, Kerri D'Agostino, Mary Beth Vlahos and Arianna Izzo all played well defending the goal.

Liberty also played well in the middle of the field, trying to keep the ball in the opponents' zone. Halfbacks Brigid Murphy, Cailinn Connolly, Laura Smaldone, Diana Cotumaccio, Michelle LaRosa and Casey Policari always gave it their all.

Although the offense sputtered at times, Lizzie Pond, Lisa Janik, Kim Hotarek, Meghan Gaffney always seemed to be around the goal looking to score the winner.

Goaltenders Paige Brown and Genevieve Gadaleta were called on weekly to keep the score down and were very dependable all year.

The girls ended with a very respectable 3-3-3 record. The girls showed incredible progress throughout the year, showing improvements in every facet of the game. The coaches, Joe Janik and Russ Brown, would like to thank all the girls and their parents for a great year and are looking forward to doing it again next year.
