Torah Study Group

Rabbi Todd Chizner uses the classic rabbinic technique of revealing layer after layer of meaning within a given passage of the Torah: starting with the surface level and moving through to deeper understandings. Classes include the reading of a Torah passage in English, explanations of the Hebrew words, thought provoking questions and a healthy amount of discussion. The Wizard of Oz

Produced by Yates Musical Theatre, will be performed at 2 p.m. at the Munsey Park Elementary School auditorium. The performance will last about one hour. Advance ticket sales are available by U.S. mail. Advance season tickets for both shows are $20 per person or $12 per show. All tickets at the door on day of show are $14 each. Women’s Club Program

The Women’s Club of The Congregational Church of Manhasset, 1845 Northern Blvd., will celebrate its 71st birthday at noon. A speaker from Community Mainstreaming Associates, Inc., a non-profit organization, will provide an in-depth look at the Sweet Comfort Bakery and Café in Port Washington, a business enterprise affiliate, which offers employment to men and women with developmental and intellectual disabilities. 77-Year-Old Mature Single to Speak to Seniors

Beverly Munter will conduct a multimedia presentation for seniors 65 and older entitled, “The Joys of Finding Love, Friendship and Yes, Intimacy, Again: Let’s Take Your Private Side Public.” The program will take place at the Manhasset Library, 30 Onderdonk Ave., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The event is free.

The Power of Good Film

Temple Judea of Manhasset, 333 Searingtown Rd., Manhasset, presents the documentary film The Power of Good. This film tells the story of courage and determination of one man, Nicholas Winton, who has been called “Britain’s Schindler.” This young unsung hero, together with his team of concerned and dedicated individuals, managed to save 669 endangered children from almost certain death at the hands of Nazis and Nazi collaborators. For 50 years Nicholas Winton told no one of his rescue efforts and missions until his wife discovered papers in their attic that related to his prewar activities. Today, there are more than 5,000 descendants living around the world today. •Stroke Support Group. North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset offers a free weekly support group for stroke survivors and caregivers every Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 300 Community Dr., Entrance 3, and Apt. Bldg. #304. Each meeting begins with a general social period from 10 to 11 a.m. From 11 a.m. to noon guest speakers give presentations on a wide variety of topics. Lunch is from noon to 12:45 p.m. (bring your own lunch, beverages provided). From 12:50 pm to 1:30 pm, physical therapy is provided for stroke survivors, and concurrently a separate caregiver’s support group meeting is held. •Brain Tumor Support Group. This is an educational support group designed to help adults with brain tumors improve their quality of life and share their experiences. •Brain Aneurysm Support Group held by the Brain Aneurysm Center at North Shore University Hospital, part of the Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience, on the second Tuesday of every month at NSUH’s 9th floor Tower conference room, 300 Community Dr., Entrance 3. Known as the “Circle of Friends,” the support group is open to all brain aneurysm patients, family members and friends. The group is led by social workers, registered nurses and a brain aneurysm coordinator. Attendees are able to share feelings and experiences regarding reactions to diagnosis, treatment and recovery and receive group and professional support in coping with a life changing event. Exhibit

Look Good, Feel Better

The American Cancer Society’s two-hour class for women undergoing treatment for cancer. It is designed to help them deal with possible appearance-related side effects such as hair loss and skin changes, while enhancing their self-image at the same time. The class is free. Nassau County Art Museum

The Nassau County Art Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays. The museum offers docent-led tours for individuals or families every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Each tour can accommodate up to 20 people. No reservations are required, but spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The tours are free with paid admission. The museum also welcomes group tours from schools, camps or other community groups. Reservations for these tours must be made in advance. For prices and information, call 484-9338.

Sands-Willets House Tours

From May through October, the Sands-Willets House, circa 1735, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the headquarters of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is open for guided tours of its 10 fully furnished rooms on the first and third Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. Also included is a tour of the 1600’s Dutch barn. Tour hours: 2:15 and 3:15 p.m. An admission fee of $5 per adult and $2.50 for children under 12 helps the society maintain the house, its barn and the grounds on which they stand. Teen Helpline

If you need to talk to someone who cares, call Tel-A-Teen at 254-BE-OK, Monday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tel-A-Teen is a youth phone center answered by teen “sharers” under the supervision of an adult.

Violence Hotline

The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence is the service provider in Nassau County for the victims of domestic or dating violence, sexual assault and elder abuse. The Coalition operates a fully staffed, 24-hour hotline (516) 542-0404. Counseling, safe housing, advocacy and legal assistance are available in a warm, supportive, professional atmosphere. For women who are victims of violent behavior, safety is a major concern. Therefore the coalition operates a safe home in Nassau County for battered women and their children. Advocates are also available Monday through Friday in Family Court and at Domestic Violence Court in Criminal Court and are on-call 24 hours a day for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in local hospital emergency rooms.
