Senior forward Kevin Roach opened the scoring on a putback and guards Gerard Cunningham and Tyler Eppich followed with consecutive three-pointers as the MacArthur boys basketball team eventually opened a 10-0 lead en route to a 55-38 win over Island Trees in the finals of the Jeff Shaw Memorial Basketball Tournament on Friday, Dec. 9.
Roach, who is being recruited by Division III Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, finished with a game-high 20 points and was named tournament MVP. He fell three points shy of matching his career high, which came at Port Washington last season. It marked the third time Roach has reached the 20-point plateau in his four-year varsity career. He also netted 20 points as a freshman against Syosset.
Teammate Dan Svenelid as well as Island Trees’ Vinny Vetrone, Division’s Colby Lapp and Plainedge’s Nick Cupolo also made the all-tournament team.
Svenelid and junior forward Andrew Seniuk had eight points apiece in MacArthur’s win against Island Trees as the Generals improved to 2-0.
MacArthur opened a 20-point lead after one quarter and beat Plainedge, 62-41, to reach the finals.
The Generals begin conference play with games at Calhoun on Friday, Dec. 16 and at Plainview JFK on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
