After almost two years of asking the Board of Education for approval, and Keith Snyder being able to arrange his athletic budget, Division Avenue and MacArthur now have a District Swim Team. The girls (and boys beginning November) from both high schools will compete against other local high schools. The girls have gotten off to a great start with winning their first two swim meets against Uniondale and Lynbrook, and on Saturday, Sept. 25 they placed 5th at Relay Carnival at Eisenhower’s Aquatic Center, swimming against the 20 other local high schools.
The Girls Swim Team is being coached by Colleen Sharkey, and consists of the following girls. K. Aquilina, A. Balder, A. Bates, M. Butler, S. Butler, S. Cahill, T. Carlo, D. DeSanto, D. Galiatsatos, G. Gonzales, P. Jurgens, D. Kramer, J. Mandell, E. McCarthy, M. McCarthy, M. Montefusco, B. Mora, D. O’Mara, K. Redling, H. Robertson, K. Santino, M. Sobhy, R. Sobhy, K. Turkovich, K. Volpe, E. Williams, V. Wyckoff and V. Zaccone.
The team would like to thank all the local merchants, families and friends who helped raise funds over the last two years to make this dream come true for the girls and boys, and hope to have your support in the coming years. We have been able to purchase equipment, (i.e., fins, pull buoys, hand paddles, kick boards and bags) along with sweatshirts and sweatpants for the team. The same will also be done for the boys’ team in November when they begin their season. The girls would also like to thank Dr. Ianni, Principal from Division Avenue for coming down to their meets. His support is greatly appreciated.
