The Levittown Athletic Club girls’ softball team, Slammers, captured the Babe Ruth Metro New York Championship banner in the 16U bracket with 3 solid wins this summer. This was the Slammers second year in a row of capturing the Metro N.Y. banner (14U in 2009).
On the first day, bats came alive with a 15 hit attack in a solid 13-0 victory against their nemesis the Pelham Bay Belles. Pelham Bay and the Slammers have been doing battle over the last three seasons with the Slammers winning two of the last three championships. The Slammers then faced the Kingsbridge City Divas on the second day and soundly beat them with pitchers Ashley Massoni and Alannah Basile firing back-to-back no-hitters. The Slammers took the first game by a score of 7-1 and the second game 7-0. Meghan Acton, Alannah Basile, Samantha Basile and Shamar Sanchez led the hitting attack with multiple hit games over the weekend set, advancing the team to the Atlantic City regionals.
The golf tournament on Thursday, Aug. 5 seemed like it would never happen. The forecast called for thundershowers. When we got to the golf course, the skies were very heavy with clouds. It did rain for about two minutes. Then the skies cleared and the sun came out. We had the hottest day of the year on the golf course. The scores reflected the heat. Forty-two men showed up, a good number considering the weather forecast. We had only 20 pars and one birdie by Ray Onorato on the 272-yard, par four, seventh hole. Only six men shot under net par and three more shot even par. The next round for Match Play will be on Thursday, Aug. 19. For those men still in it, please find your opponent and sign in together.
For fans of the Islanders dynasty in the 1980s, which won four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980-1984, a little piece of history recently experienced a big transformation as everything from the boards to the scoreboard underwent a revamping at the Cantiague Park Ice Rink in Hicksville.
Perhaps one of the most humble and underrated franchises of all time, the New York Islanders set a record for most consecutive playoff series wins, in any professional sport, with 19. During that time, the team laced their skates and taped their sticks between games at its second home: the practice facility at Cantiague Park.
A six-phase construction period began on July 3, wherein the rink had its ice melted and boards, glass and nets all removed before brand new replacements could be installed. Although not ideal for workers on the project, one of the hottest July months in recent memory significantly expedited the process of melting the ice, a vital step in the renovation that had to be completed before others could begin.
