Mike Cohen Bikes From San Diego To Meet Lifesaving Oncologist

For some, riding a bicycle is a simple hobby. For Mike Cohen, a 27-year-old native of Levittown who now resides in San Diego, biking is a personal statement of triumph and a call to action to other young cancer survivors.

Cohen recently completed a 3,132-mile cross-country bike ride from San Diego to Long Island, finishing his journey—and celebrating eight cancer-free years—at North Shore-LIJ’s Monter Cancer Center, where he thanked the oncologist who helped save his life, Steven Allen, MD.

 

Hughes Wins Wrestling Title

Jeremy Hughes, an eighth-grader at Jonas A. Salk Middle School recently won the New York State Youth wrestling championship in the 150 lb. class. It is the second time Hughes has won the title. He wrestles for Coach Colin Cornuck at Five Star Wrestling.

George Dlugolonski Accepts Lifetime Achievement Award

George Dlugolonski has spent his entire 39-year career as a physical education teacher and wrestling coach at Chaminade High School. A Levittown resident, Dlugolonski (or “Dugo” as he is affectionately nicknamed), has coached a total league champions and 108 state champions over his career. Among those athletes are 91 NY Catholic State champions, four All-Americans, six Academic All-Americans and three New York State Federation Champions.

Dlugolonski has been named “Coach of the Year” 14 times, and was inducted into the New York State Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007 and the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2008.

 

GU11 Takes First Place In Pennsylvania Tourney

The Island Trees girls U11 soccer team recently traveled to Pennsylvania to compete in the Pocono Whitewater Soccer Tournament. The trip was a great success as the girls took first place with a 3-0 record.

The Island Trees Shooting Stars won the bracket with 5-3 and 6-2 wins over teams from Wyoming Valley, PA and Coplay, PA.

The Cantiague Park Senior Men’s Golf League had its seventh tournament on June 7. They had 36 golfers on a beautiful sunny morning. There were five golfers who scored 39 or better. Sveld Knudsen scored a brilliant 38 for low actual score and Jim O’Brien won low overall net. Charlie Hong scored under 40 for the seventh time in a row and leads the money board with $55. Pat Lehane won the 50/50 raffle.

Fundraiser for Bethany House, which provides help for homeless women and children on LI

Bethany House of Nassau County will be holding its 16th Annual Golf and Tennis Outing on Monday, July 23, at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Club in Brookville. The day will include a full roster of activities: golf and tennis tournaments, brunch, pool, outdoor lunch, cocktail party and sumptuous buffet dinner.

Bethany House is dedicated to improving the lives of homeless women and children here on Long Island. Their five residences provide safe, supportive emergency housing and a comprehensive range of additional programs and resources to support families and return them to self-sufficiency. Of those families who have remained at Bethany House for more than two weeks, 94 percent have successfully found permanent housing. Bethany’s five homes service up to 85 persons nightly.

 

Ducks Manager Kevin Baez Celebrates 100th Victory

The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 17-3 in game one of a day/night doubleheader on Saturday June 2 at Bethpage Ballpark. With the win, Kevin Baez earned his 100th win as manager of the Ducks. The second-year skipper led Long Island to a 78-47 record in 2011 during the regular season. Don McCormack has the most wins as a Ducks manager with 399 from 2001 to 2005.

The Revolution cracked the scoreboard first with a RBI single by Andres Perez to right field off Ducks starter Jason Monti in the second. Long Island would even it up in the bottom of the inning off Revs starter Junior Novoa when Wilberto Ortiz lifted a RBI sac fly to left.

Belmont fans react to I’ll Have Another race scratch

After a 33-year drought without a Triple Crown winner at the Belmont Stakes, many were looking forward to witnessing I’ll Have Another go for history in the 144th annual race. Disappointment and surprise, however, soon came to racing fans when it was announced just a mere day before his attempt at history, that the Belmont favorite was being scratched from the race due to tendonitis in his left leg.

While many may not have made the trek to Elmont this year without the treat of a Triple Crown, longtime racing fan Louis Howe still made the 3-hour drive from North Hampton, MA to see the race.

 

St. Bernard’s Champs Beat St. John’s

St. Bernard’s third-grade basketball champs, Michigan State, coached by Bob Dwyer, beat the St. John’s team in a recent championship game, 9-2. Standing: Allie, Nicole, Caitlyn, Julie, league MVP Hailey, Danielle; kneeling: Katie, Jessica, Tarangini and Kailey.
