The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball announced that three members of the Long Island Ducks were named year-end All-Stars. Infielders Ray Navarrete and Dan Lyons were chosen as first-team All-Stars while first baseman Brandon Sing took home second-team honors.

Navarrete, who was selected as the first-team utility man, led the Ducks with a .309 batting average, good for fifth in the Atlantic League, and 90 runs batted in which ranked third in the league. The seven-year Duck set an Atlantic League record with 50 doubles this season, shattering the previous mark of 42, which he set in 2007. In addition, he compiled a franchise record 68 extra-base hits, surpassing his total of 66 in 2009 and coming just one shy of the league record of 69. The Port Washington resident was selected as the starting second baseman for the Liberty Division during the All-Star Game in Camden, N.J. and clubbed a two-run homer in the first inning.

Event at Bethpage State Park on Oct. 28 seeks to raise $100,000 for brain cancer research

After last year’s successful inaugural event, the 2nd Annual 5K Run For Rob, which raises funds for brain cancer research, is coming up on Sunday, Oct. 28. This year, organizers of the event at Bethpage State Park seek to raise $100,000 for Voices Against Brain Cancer in memory of Dr. Robert Bernstein of Brookville, a beloved family man, coach and OB-GYN who lost his battle with the disease in June 2010.

Dr. David Chalif, chief of neurovascular neurosurgery and co-director of the NSUH Brain Aneurysm Center at North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital in Manhasset, will be awarded the 2012 Robert Bernstein Humanitarian Award at the event. Chalif, who saw Bernstein as a patient, said that despite a lot of medical progress over the course of his career, particularly in digital imaging techniques, the prognosis for patients with this often aggressive cancer is sobering.

Sadly, after just seven years, the scholarship manager, Ralph Boettger says the funds for this award are in danger of being exhausted.

Division Avenue Celebrates Homecoming

A day of community pride

It was a great day of fun and community pride as family, staff and friends gathered for homecoming on the grounds of Division Avenue High School (DAHS). The kickoff to the weekend commenced with a pep rally in the gymnasium, where students proudly wore their school colors and cheered for their athletes.

The DAHS marching band led the parade, followed by the kickline team, cheerleaders, Wisdom Avenue’s marching band, homecoming king and queen candidates and students who accompanied colorful and creatively themed class banners. Prior to the start of the game, senior football players, cheerleaders and kickline team and marching band members were honored alongside their parents for having dedicated many hours on and off the field. Members of the board of education, high school administrators, student council members and coaching staff were also on hand to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Legislator Dennis Dunne (Class of 1968), who donated a new scoreboard for the athletic field.
