Strecher, Lillian (Ehrlich), 86, passed away in her sleep on March 2, after a long fight with cancer. Proud to be a New Yorker, she was the dedicated wife of the late Harry Stecher and amazing mother of son Allen Stecher and wife Arlene and daughter Debra (Stecher) McKosky and husband Robert. “Grandma Daisy”, as she was known by many, a reference to her alter ego of Daisy the Clown, was proud of learning how to juggle as she frequently uplifted the spirits of hospitalized children. Lillian was the cherished Bubbe to granddaughter Meriah Anne McKosky and Grandson Jacob Harrison McKosky and wife Virginia. Aunt Lillian loved her nephews Paul Zam and Godson Robert Zam and partner Mary Grover. Lillian was partner in crime with her late sister Jeanette. She loved playing a vital role for 38 years at Hofstra University where she became the editor of the bulletin. Very active in her community, Lillian served for many years with honor and dedication as president of her condo association. A voracious reader, talented gardener and formidable Scrabble opponent, Lillian had an incredibly contagious sense of humor with a one of a kind personality. Anyone who knew her observed her energy and her love of life. A celebration of Lillian’s life was held at New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, on March 10 at 11:30 a.m.
Barbara Dakin Bartell Steiner, CEO of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services in Hicksville, one of Long Island’s pioneer advocates and leaders in the behavioral health field, passed away on Feb. 15 due to complications related to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was 77.
Bartell was an entrepreneurial leader willing to take risks, aggressively develop programs and advocate for the needs of others. She strongly believed in the resiliency of the human spirit and each person’s ability to recover from mental illness and/ or chemical dependency.
Schaffner, Barbara A., 72, of Levittown, formerly of Elmhurst, IL, died Feb. 4, in Bolingbrook, IL. She was born August 31, 1940, in Elmhurst. Beloved daughter of the late George A. and Isabella Flemming Schaffner, dear sister of Mary (Bob) Korman of Omaha, NE, adored aunt of Erin Gillotte, Robyn (Dave) Lisy and Michael (Julie) Korman, all of Bolingbrook, IL, great-aunt of Caitlin, Meghan, Alex, Sydney, Kimberly and Madison, great-great aunt of Charlotte.
Swearingen, Kenneth Hartly, 90, died on Jan. 17, at his daughter’s home in Brookline, NH. He was born on July 30, 1922 in Claremont, SD, son of Joseph Swearingen and Myrtle (Freeland) Jones. Husband of the late Ruth M. (Heimburger) Swearingen. Prior to her death on Nov. 3, 1991 they had shared almost 49 years of marriage.
Swearingen served his country proudly during WWII in the U.S. Navy. Following his service he worked as a carpenter and then went to work as a sorter for the U.S. Post Office. He enjoyed cutting trees, and made a point to visit Granny’s Restaurant whenever he was in Homosassa, FL. He is survived by a son, Kenneth Hartly Swearingen II of Plano, TX; a daughter, Marlene Morgan of Brookline, NH; Four grandsons, Keith, Matthew, Trevor and Evan; and two great-granddaughters, Jade and Abigail. Graveside Service was held on Jan. 21 at Pine Grove Cemetery in Brookline, NH. Contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels – Milford, NH, P.O. Garthwaite, Howard L. of Levittown died on Dec. 23. Worked for the U. S. Postal Service for 35 years, retired as manager. Purple Heart recipient. Survivor of Stalag 17. Recently featured on HBO documentary, Hard Times Lost on Long Island. Beloved husband of the late Mary Llyn. Loving father of James H. (Patricia), Alan P. (Gayle), and Howard M. (Stephanie). Cherished grandfather of Brian, Kevin, Glenn, Jacki, and Andrea. Services were held at the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Homes, Levittown Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 27. Funeral services were held on Dec. 28, with interment at Calverton National Cemetery. Isabelle F. Wachter, 88, longtime resident of Levittown died on Sept. 22, 2012. Beloved wife of the late Charles. Dear sister of Anne Laufer and the late Bud Heron. Survived by her much-loved children: Bonnie Hamma, Dawn Greil (Joe), Brian (Deb) and Donna Olivero (Dennis). Cherished grandmother of Charles, Rick, Dana (Bryan), Zachary and great-grandmother of Charles, Nicole, Megan, and the late Heather. Dear sister-in-law of Valerie and aunt to many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home in Levittown. A private interment was held on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012.
