Editorial: Marine Corps Sergeant Majors Cup Competition June 16

Marines and potential recruits, “poolees,” will fill Zach’s Bay at Jones Beach on Saturday, June 16 for the annual Sergeant Majors Cup competition. More than 600 marines, from more than 14 New York State recruiting stations, will participate in the competition held each year for all Marine Corps candidates waiting to deploy to boot camp.
The event is a physical competition, giving candidates a preview of some of the grueling demands of boot camp once they arrive at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC.
Some of the boot camp-style events that the marine candidates will participate in include: relay races, pull up competitions, a Humvee pull and equipment demonstrations. Some of the drill instructors from Parris Island will be available for instruction and officiating.
There are about 300 recruit candidates waiting to enter the Marine Corps on Long Island. Some of the candidates will be leaving for boot camp as soon as Monday, others over the course of the next seven months. The event is also a family day and barbecue for the poolees and their families.
The competition begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public for viewing.

Island Trees Union Free School District faces a few hurdles in its upcoming 2013-14 budget. The loss of the BOCES Geneva N. Gallow building lease and the increasing mandated retirement system (TRS/ERS) adds up to $2 million in lost revenue. The TRS/ERS contributions increased by almost $1.4 million, and the Gallow lease loss totals approximately $500,000, including the utility costs.

From jewelry and dolls to sports memorabilia and computers, a collector’s interests can range from the most bizarre items to the most common. Michael Katz, longtime collector of vintage radios from the 1920s to ’50s, said that the two kinds of things collectors go for are “stuff that’s really unusual and really decorative or the rare and expensive sets.”

The Lady Generals lacrosse team at MacArthur High School earned the #1 spot and the title of 2013 conference champions, an accomplishment that last occurred in 2006. The team finished with a conference record of 9-1, succumbing in their only game to Oyster Bay by a one-goal deficit.
