The Levittown Public Library budget vote and trustee election will take place on Tuesday, April 21 from noon to 9 p.m. in the community room.

The total tax levy amount for the 2009/10 year is $6,346,511, which represents a $112,063 increase over the previous year. The total annual average of library tax per household is $368.83, compared to $362.32 last year. This is an average yearly difference of $6.51 per household. Library taxes are based on the assessed value of your property multiplied by the library tax rate.

"It is important that taxpayers know that the library budget is separate from the school budget," a press release from the Library Board of Trustees states. "Your library tax dollars enables the library to offer new books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, online databases and programs to residents. The library budget also provides the funds for references, adult, teen and children's services, along with Senior Connections, homebound and hospice services."

The proposed budget includes a $139,000 surplus, which will offset the total expenditure increases. This includes a $238,063 increase in personnel, a $3,000 increase in library materials, and a $10,000 increase in operations.

The library currently offers 68 hours of service per week with four additional hours on Sundays from October to May, 218,160 books, 17,502 audio recordings, 660 periodicals, 10,031 DVDs and videos and access to 100 online databases, periodicals, and the Internet.

During the 2007/08 fiscal year there were: 226,461 library visits, 377,711 items borrowed, 25,742 public Internet users, 23,995 items borrowed for Levittown residents on interlibrary loan, 88,584 reference questions answered, 112 adult programs (lectures, plays, movies, workshops - attendance 2,930), 11 teen programs (lectures, workshops, summer reading program - attendance 298), 368 children's programs (storytimes, workshops, summer reading program - attendance 11,552) and 25,465 registered borrowers.

For comparison purposes, in the 2006/07 fiscal year there were 259,841 library visits, 393,635 items borrowed, 26,053 public Internet users, 12,305 items borrowed for Levittown residents on interlibrary loan, 70,408 reference questions answered, 232 adult programs, 10 teen programs, 372 children's programs and 23,174 registered borrowers.

There is one vacancy for a library trustee position. The five-year term ends on June 30, 2014 however, as of press time no one had applied. The Levittown Library is located at 1 Bluegrass Lane in Levittown. You are eligible to vote if you are registered for school district elections or the general elections.
