The varsity baseball team got off to a great start with an 8-0 victory over Hewlett in a rain-shortened contest. Bryan Verbitsky picked up right where he left off last year with a dominant performance. Verbitsky went 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs. His first inning home run put the Bulldogs ahead for good. Bryan had a great day on the mound in his first varsity start. He threw 1 hit ball over 4 scoreless innings while striking out 8 for the win. Mike Manganiello blasted a 2 RBI triple in the first for his first varsity hit while Dom Raucci also added his first varsity hit with a single in the top of the third. Anthony Mele continues to impress going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Eric Fazio went 1 for 2 with 2 runs from the lead-off spot while Dan Schulz had 3 stolen bases on the day.
The Island Trees Boys Varsity Track team competed in its first meet of the season at Bethpage. The Bulldogs won the quad meet defeating Great Neck North, Glen Cove and Bethpage. The boys were led by Chris Bourgade, who won the 400m. hurdles, the 110 hurdles and the 200m run. Tom Reilly won the 400m. run and Dylan Caragher won the shot put and discus. John Duffy and Bill Dmuchowski finished 1st and 2nd in the 800m run. Stephen Landini, Anthony Leonick and Tyler Blauvelt swept the triple jump. Pete Tucci placed 2nd in the high jump. Nick Spitaletta finished 2nd in the 110 hurdles and 2nd in the 400m hurdles. Other scorers were Josh Sailor, Joe Duthie, Jeff Malkiel, Kevin Carman, Matt Passatempo, Billy Storey and Ceyhun Dagdeviren.
The girls varsity track team opened its dual meet season by defeating Great Neck North, Glen Cove and Bethpage. Jackie Kupfer, Theresa Hinshaw, Samantha and Emily Cranmer, Michelle Duffy, Kelly Schulz, Danielle Medellin, Jade Coyle and Francis Zuniga all contributed to the team's balanced scoring and efforts.
