To the Town of Hempstead - and Newsday Watchdog - thank you (Not!). Here we are again, another winter and multiple calls to officials of the Town of Hempstead about snow removal do not get solved.
Two summers ago through the Levittown property owners, the subject about homeowners and businesses not clearing snow from the sidewalks was answered with a smart alec response, "Hey, it is summer, what do you want me to do?"
Recently, a note to Kate Murray via the Internet, using her website, got a response that I would be contacted by the appropriate department - nothing.
Multiple calls to Gary Hudes' office have not resulted in any positive response.
I have also sent multiple letters to Newsday Watchdog and - nothing.
We are asked to be "green" and not waste gasoline; shouldn't the folks who are pushing us to conserve make sure that it is safe for us to walk?
The other day while walking home from Waldbaum's there was an older woman walking in the street because it was less safe to walk on the sidewalk (By the way, she was using one of those four post walkers.). I have been honked and screamed at because I am walking in the street while the sidewalk is not safe.
I am told that a complaint must be lodged against specific properties before the town can act ... Why? NYC just gives out a summons - guess what, their effective homeowners' tax rate is much lower than what we are charged.
Please note that since this carries a violation and fine, this should be a "no cost" issue for the towns - it is also a voluntary tax - you choose to not clear the sidewalk, you accept the fine. Since it is a safety issue, shouldn't this be a priority? Or, are they waiting until I either slip on the ice while on the sidewalk or get hit by a car because the town did not do their job. Maybe some of the deficit could be closed by fining those who choose to not follow the safety rules.
How many of the elderly are held captive in their homes because their neighbors and the owners can't (won't) keep the sidewalk clear. Does any lawyer want to take up that class action suit?
Thank you to the Town of Hempstead for all of your help (Not).
BTW, if I walk on the main road, is it the county or state that I have to call?
