Forward Kevin Roach stepped up for the MacArthur Boys Varsity Basketball team in the fourth quarter on Dec. 22 as the Generals headed into a brief holiday break with a 61-52 league win at Mepham.
With MacArthur clinging to a one-point lead, Roach converted a pair of three-point plays in the opening 1 minute, 29 seconds of the final quarter. Later in the period, after hitting a pair of free throws with 4:33 left, Roach stole the inbounds pass and was fouled. He then converted another free throw that gave the Generals a 10-point lead. MacArthur shot 18-for-24 from the free-throw line in the final period.
Roach's nine points all came in the fourth quarter before fouling out. Guard Bobby Thomas had a game-high 20 points for the Generals (4-1, 1-1 Conference AA-III). Andrew Mege had 11 points and Billy Ryan had 10 points.
MacArthur rebounded with the win against Mepham after squandering a nine-point fourth-quarter lead and dropping its conference opener, 71-65, at first-place Freeport on Dec. 16.
The Generals' season continues with a Dec. 29-30 tournament at Great Neck North. MacArthur takes a nine-game non-conference winning streak into that event. The Generals haven't dropped a nonleague game since a Dec. 13, 2006 overtime loss to host Wantagh in the finals of the Sports Booster Club Tournament.
