The MacArthur Boys Varsity Basketball team tipped off its season by winning the annual Jeff Shaw Memorial Holiday Tournament. Senior forward Billy Ryan scored a career-high 16 points as the host Generals beat Division, 69-59, in the championship game. MacArthur won the tournament for the third straight year under third-year head coach Eric Rubin and assistant coach Doug Neu.
The tournament, which MacArthur won last season by upsetting Elmont in the finals, was expanded from four to eight teams this year and was jointly hosted by Division. MacArthur beat Plainedge and Valley Stream North en route to the finals.
Senior guard Bobby Thomas had 13 points against the Dragons, including shooting 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final 2 minutes, 32 seconds, and was named MVP. Sophomore Kevin Monahan had 14 points and freshman Kevin Roach had 13 points for the young Generals. The all-tournament team included Thomas, Roach and Ryan from MacArthur and Division's Bobby Nagelberg (24 points) and Mike Agunzo. Valley Stream North beat Calhoun in the consolation game.
The Generals next play at Mepham on Dec. 22 at 4:45 p.m. in a conference game.
