The winner of this Spotlight on Business is Levittown Community Council President Gary Fisch. A Levittown resident for 33 years, Fisch is a retired national sales manager for a textile company who has, along with his wife Barbara, been active for years in the community.
With Levittown Pride as its umbrella theme, the Levittown Community Council has been leading the way in bringing both pride and unity to the community since its inception in 1997. With its roots in the 50th anniversary of Levittown celebration that year, the council is responsible for five major events each year in the community: The Lazy Days of Summer, the Winter Festival, the Junior Volunteer of the Year Award (open to all middle school students in the Levittown and Island Trees School districts). the Home for the Holidays Award for the best decorated houses in Levittown, Earth Day clean-up (in conjunction with the Town of Hempstead, this year, which tripled participation.)
As Levittown celebrated its 60th anniversary, the Community Council was right there helping to lead the way. In fact, in 2007, the Community Council held the first forum for the "Green Levittown" initiative.
Fisch's involvement in his community goes far beyond his role as president of the Levittown Community Council. He was a member of the Board of the Levittown School District (1995-98,) a current board member of the Levittown Historical Society, President of the Friends of the Levittown Public Library, former board member of the Levittown Property Owners Association, board member of the Island Trees and Hicksville Soccer Clubs and a coach of many youth teams over the years.
Funded by membership dues and supported by 17 local organizations, including the Levittown Chamber of Commerce, the Island Trees and Levittown School and Library Districts, the Levittown Kiwanis, St. Bernard's Church, The Levittown Community Church, along with other houses of worship, the Council can be reached at 735-6068, via email at Lev.council@yahoo.com or by mail at P.O.
