While most girls are anxiously shuffling between nail and hair appointments the day before their prom, Amanda Castaños had far more to be anxious about than prom night preparations.

Because unlike other girls, she was preparing for her Broadway debut.

Castaños first auditioned for the groundbreaking musical Spring Awakening back in April, and request for a callback audition came the very day before her prom.

After attending four more callback auditions, she was offered the part of Martha in this Tony award-winning play.

Castaños, who graduated from both Division Avenue High School and The Long Island High School for the Arts in June, has been involved in theater since seventh grade.

Her acting experiences at both her schools and at the Cultural Arts playhouse include roles as Fantane in Les Miserables, Lucy in A Charlie Brown Christmas and Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show.

"Looking back on it, I see how horrible an acting job I did," Castaños said. "But I suppose I've grown from that."

The casting agents at Spring Awakening would certainly agree, as Castaños was selected from a competitive pool of actresses to replace Lilli Cooper in the cast.

Castaños was selected for the role despite having no professional acting experience. However, many believed the role was always meant for her.

"Before I had even seen the show, people were telling me how great I would be as Martha," Castaños remembered. "It was always something I just brushed off."

Castaños stopped brushing them off after her first audition, when she began doodling signs reading "Spring Awakening- now featuring Amanda Castaños as Martha," during her classes.

"I guess all the daydreaming and doodling during class paid off," Castaños joked.

Castaños admits that balancing this class time and acting has always been a challenge, with rehearsals running late into the evening.

Her parents, however, never disrupted this balance of theater and school, because Castaños always remained dedicated to both commitments.

Her father, Abel Castaños, was actually the one who took her on her birthday to see Spring Awakening for the first time.

She now gets to act in the play eight times a week, commuting to the city each day for the performances.

"It feels amazing to be on that stage every night," Castaños explained.

Her contract remains open about when her run in the musical will end and she does not currently have any plans for her next project after Spring Awakening.

While acting and singing are her main passions, Castaños also enjoys movies, jujitsu, basketball and rocking climbing.

Castaños has stayed very down to earth despite this early success and remains excited about her new endeavor, despite how tiring it may be.

"I'm in one of the most popular, most talked about and probably one of the most controversial shows on Broadway," Castaños said. "What else could I ask for?"
