The varsity baseball club finished off a sweep of Glen Cove by a score of 8-1. The Bulldogs used a combination of great pitching, solid defense, speed and power in this dominant performance. I.T. totaled three home runs and 10 stolen bases as a team. Nicky Marchelos tossed a complete game, going seven strong innings, while scattering eight hits and striking out three for his fourth win of the season. Nicky also blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal. Bryan Verbitsky and Paul DelGiacco also homered to power the Bulldogs to victory. Eric Fazio had a big day, going three-for-three with three runs scored and five stolen bases. His 5 stolen bases is an I.T. single game franchise record. The Bulldogs overall record now stands at 16-2. The magic number for clinching the League ABC 2 Championship is now one game.
The junior varsity baseball team won its sixth game in a row by defeating Bethpage 5-1. Brandon Garcia pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to earn the victory. Offensively, the team was led by Mike Manganiello, who went three-for-three with three RBIs and Chris Cutrone, who laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score A.J. Mattia when the Bulldogs were down 1-0.
On Senior Day, Jillian McGovern struck out nine and walked five in a one-hitter to send her seniors out in style. Meghan Biondolillo went two-for-three with a homerun, two runs and an RBI to lead I.T., who is 7-9 in Conference ABC-1. Ashley Alesi bunted in a run to cap a two-run second inning. Once again, the defense flashed their leather to seal the win for the Lady Dawgs. The girls are starting to heat up as we approach the playoffs.
The boys' track team finished their league meet schedule by defeating Great Neck North, New Hyde Park and Bethpage. They placed first and second in 13 of the 16 events that took place, while finishing with a 9-4 league record. Chris Bourgade improved his top time in the county by running the 400m hurdles in 58.9 seconds. Dylan Caragher dominated the shot put and discus by taking first place, as well as running the leadoff leg on the wining 4 x 100m relay. Bryan Matus stunned the crowd when he crossed the finish line bringing the 4 x 100m relay to victory. He also showed his exhilarating attributes by coming in second and third in the long jump and triple jump. Bill Dmuchowski won the 800m and 1600m dashes and Tom Reilly won the 400m dash. Dan Carlson finished first in the long jump and 100m dash as Rick McCurry took second right behind him. The team placed third in the county and are now waiting to compete in the divisional and county meets.
The eighth grade Baseball team continued its excellence on the field by shutting out Berner 5-0. Mike Jeannetti pitched five scoreless innings, while striking out 10 Berner Batters. Tyler Byrne notched the save by pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Sound base running, timely hitting and stellar defense by all were keys to the victory.
The seventh grade baseball team won their home opener by defeating Plainview 4-1. The winning pitcher was Lou Belleau. Jim Carabott had the save with 5 strikeouts. Tom Sinclair led the team with two hits and one RBI. John Daly and Zach Dolgos each had a hit and RBI. Bobby Litras, Jim Carabott, Lou Mele and Keith Seibner had hits also.
The eighth grade Softball team defeated Wantagh 14-3. Meghan Acton pitched an outstanding game, striking out 13 batters. Meghan also hit a solo homerun. Nicole Pellegrino also played an excellent defensive game as well as offense. She also hit a two run homerun. Samantha Basile played a great defensive game. She caught for Acton and held on to each pitch.
The seventh grade softball team played a terrific game, defeating Plainedge 2-1. Ashley Bourgade was amazing, going two-for-two with a solo homerun and a double. Maria DiFrancisco also had a nice day at the plate going two-for-three with two singles. Tori Tedeschi pitched a two-hitter while striking out 15.
The boys' lacrosse team suffered a tough defeat against Plainview. The boys, who were missing a goalie and a number of players, showed their true heart by coming back from a 9-1 first half to losing 12-7. The Bulldogs won the second half 6-3 with the help of goalie Alex Zbikowski with 11 saves, Mike Kutzma with two goals, Danny Gallante with one goal and two assists, James Day with one goal and one assist, J.T. Famularo, Mike Pascale and Jose Carvajal also contributed with a goal. James Lesko, Kyle Stephens and Kevin Strauss showed their strength on defense.
The girls' lacrosse team won their game against Salk with a score of 17-13. The Lady Dawgs really worked the ball around the offense during the second half. Captain Emily Lucas led the team with four assists and two goals, along with Allison Merrill with two assists and four goals. Bridget Vilbig added six goals to the scoreboard. Samantha Ciano scored a goal and gave an assist. Carley Butzgy made seven saves in goal. Great efforts made by Kathryn Gundersen.
The track team came in third place on Thursday. There were great races run by Tyler Blauvelt and Emily Cranmer, first in the 100; George Marglin, ran a 5.27 mile; Girls and Boys Relay with an amazing finish with second. Excellent showing in field events, shot put and long jump with second place.
