The Division Avenue Varsity Baseball Team is in a tie for first place in Conference ABC 1 after taking two-out-of-three games from cross-town rival Wantagh. After losing the first game 10-1 the Dragons showed great character playing at Wantagh and defeating the Warriors 9-1 behind junior pitcher Kevin Licul. Kevin got his first win of the season throwing a complete game allowing only five hits. Senior Matt Schneider gave the offense a lift in the second inning hitting a Home Run to spark a four-run inning. Senior Stephen McNamara's single in the fifth inning extended the lead to 7-1. Junior Kevin Chenicek went two-for-three and made two great defensive plays at third base. In the third game of the series Division's pitching was again the key to success. On the mound, junior Kevin Chenicek went seven innings allowing only one earned run to get the 4-2 win. This was Kevin's second consecutive complete game. Senior Matt Schneider continued his hot hitting going two-for-three and Senior Bryan Grubb also had two hits.
Division Baseball won two out of three games against Garden City this past week placing the team in first place in powerful Conference ABC I. In the first game of the series, the Dragons came back from a one-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to win 5-4. Junior Kevin Chenicek's base hit drove in Matt Schneider to tie the score at four. With the bases loaded and one-out Senior John Nizinski laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt with two strikes to score Stephen McNamara to win. Matt Schneider went two for two with two runs scored and Bryan Grubb went two for four with two runs scored.
After losing game two 6-1, Division rebounded and won the third game 7-2 behind Junior Kevin Chenicek's five shutout innings. Kevin surrendered only three hits while striking out five batters. Senior Erik Pedersen's two run single gave the Dragons a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Erik finished the day going four for four with three RBIs. Senior Bryan Grubb went three for four with two runs scored. Junior catcher Mike Fama shut down the running game in all three games to lead the defense.
Division will take on Seaford on Tuesday, May 6 at 4:30 p.m. at home.
