In a brief ceremony held Tuesday morning, Feb. 26 the Island Trees School District accepted a Blue Star Banner from members of the American Legion Post 1711.
The banner, which was designed during World War I, is usually hung in a window and symbolizes that a loved one is serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Multiple stars indicate that more then one person is serving, guidelines were set forth during World War II and today it may be hung in homes, public buildings, places of business etc. and thus it will be hung in a place of honor in the corridor of Island Trees Memorial Middle School.
On hand for the ceremony were members of the American Legion Post 1711, Island Trees and Levittown Schools superintendents and Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr., 2nd Division Commander Andy Booth, Commander Levittown American Legion Post 1711 Phil Blum, as well as Island Trees Memorial Middle School Principal Roger Bloom spoke briefly and the presentation was made.
Blum said he was proud to be involved in the Blue Star Banner presentation.
Booth said that both the Island Trees and Levittown School Districts have been more then cooperative in getting the message out to students of the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform.
A Blue Star will be presented to the Levittown School District in the near future.
