A school bus collided with a car in the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Shelter Lane in Levittown early Tuesday morning at around 7:30 a.m.

The bus, which was carrying eight special education children overturned, slid and struck a pole on Hempstead Turnpike. Nassau County Police Department ambulances, emergency service units and numerous Levittown Fire Department units rushed to the scene. There they found that the children had exited the bus and were sitting along the curb. The drivers of the bus and the car were injured.

The children were immediately taken to area hospitals for evaluation while the drivers were stabilized and later taken to the hospital.

Hempstead Turnpike was closed to all traffic as police conducted an investigation.
