The MacArthur Boys Varsity Basketball team salutes its seniors before a 7:15 p.m. tipoff in the Feb. 8 home finale against Syosset. But the Generals' season may be far from over.
MacArthur ran its winning streak to four games with a 50-41 win at Carey on Monday. The victory pulled the Generals (10-5, 6-5 Conference AA-II) into a tie for fourth place, the final position that will qualify for the playoffs in the eight-team league.
Guard Vin Sanquini - whose critical 3-pointer at Syosset three weeks earlier helped start a string of 5 wins in six games after a 1-4 league start - nailed his second and third 3-pointers of the season at a crucial time, too. With MacArthur tied with Carey early in the fourth quarter, Sanquini hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Generals a 41-35 lead. Sanquini also combined with center Tom Celentani and Mike Gattus to convert 7 of 8 free throws over the final two minutes.
The Generals enjoyed an equally thrilling 42-40 victory against Long Beach (6-9, 6-5), their primary competitor for the final playoff spot, three days earlier at Memorial. MacArthur, facing virtual elimination from playoff contention with a loss, scored the game's final 10 points, with 7 contributed by Sanquini and 3 from Chris Eichner.
The Feb. 8 pregame ceremony will honor MacArthur's eight seniors: Billy Judge, Bobby Rossi, Brett Tom, Ray Zdrodowski, Celentani, Eichner, Gattus and Sanquini. Tom plans to play lacrosse at Hofstra next academic year, while Celentani will play lacrosse at UMass and Sanquini will play baseball at Farmingdale State.
