With the MacArthur boys varsity basketball team's season slipping away, Vin Sanquini stepped up for the Generals.
The senior guard, who hit 44 percent from three-point range last season, ended a personal drought from behind the arc and ignited MacArthur's comeback from an 11-point second-half deficit Monday night in a must-win game. Sanquini's three-pointer pulled the Generals within a point, and senior forward Brett Tom's jumper in the paint with six minutes, six seconds left gave MacArthur its first second-half lead, en route to a 67-61 win at Syosset High School.
The victory kept the Generals (6-4, 2-4) in the mix for the final postseason berth in Conference AA-II, a game behind Valley Stream Central and Long Beach, which are each 3-3 in league play.
MacArthur received a game-high 22 points from senior guard Mike Gattus and 15 points from senior center Tom Celentani. Celentani, who is expected to play lacrosse at UMass next academic year, also held Syosset's leading scorer, Bryan Henrick, to a season-low five points - 16 points below his average. Sanquini's defensive rebound and two foul shots with 36.2 seconds left gave the Generals a six-point lead and secured the win.
The Generals will look to avenge an early loss to Central at 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 18 in Valley Stream. They then have a stretch of five of six games at home, all beginning at 7:15 p.m.: Jan. 25 vs. Great Neck South, Jan. 29 vs. Freeport, Feb. 1 vs. Long Beach, Feb. 6 vs. Bellmore JFK, and Feb. 8 versus Syosset (Senior Night).
