On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Island Trees Football Bulldogs played cross-town rival Plainedge. The contest was a pre-season pick as a "game to watch" in Conference III. For the Plainedge fans, it did not disappoint. However, the Dawgs were not as ecstatic. A 21-0 score at halftime in favor of the Red Devils put the Bulldogs in a desperate position. We could not muster any offense and missed too many tackles to get back into the game. A fourth quarter score on a 20 yard pass from Frank Baglivo to Joe Cataldo and an extra point kick by Rob Owens left the Dawgs in the hole 42-7.
The girls' junior varsity Soccer team won their game vs. Valley Stream South 5-0. The girls started out rough, but took the lead in the first half with Meagan Burns scoring the first goal. The girls kept their heads in the game and Meagan Burns scored another goal making the score 2-0. Sarah Kutzma and Lisa Indelicato also came into the game scoring a goal each. Assists were made by Joanne Falce, Andrea Barbera, Erin Carey and Sarah Kutzma. The last goal was scored by Kaitlyn VanAlst, bringing the score to 5-0.
The boys' junior varsity Soccer team tied New Hyde Park by the score of 0-0 for the second time this season. The Bulldogs played a terrific game with an evenly matched New Hyde Park team. Tom Enders played a steady game in goal while the defense did a great job stopping the New Hyde Park attack. The midfield play and offense dominated the game, but could not get the ball into the back of the net.
The varsity Volleyball team defeated Mineola 3-2 (25-18, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-23). Junior Lisa Barenzano recorded 20 kills while junior Megan Scher notched in 15. The defensive team of junior Deanna Brown (20), senior Jennifer Abramowski (26) and junior Jillian Foster (30) combined for 76 digs in the match. Junior Danielle Doller contributed with four kills, eight digs and five aces from the right side. Junior setter Alyssa Ambrosio had a career high of 42 assists, breaking her previous record of 36 assists.
The girls' junior varsity Volleyball team defeated Mineola to improve their record to 11-1 on the season. It took four games for the Lady Dawgs to pull out the victory. Leading the way was Chelsea Knight, Amanda Dias, Maurene Goodman, Michelle Garcia and Justine Abramowski.
It its fourth league meet of the season, the girls' Cross Country team lost to the powerful Wantagh squad; was narrowly defeated by Roslyn and easily defeated West Hempstead. Michelle Duffy was first for Island Trees and second overall in 21:02 in the 5k (3.1-mile) race held at Bethpage State Park. A total of 25 runners competed in the race. In second, third and fourth place for Island Trees and 11th, 12th and 13th place in the race were Francis Zuniga in 24:15; Jade Coyle in 24:16 and Jacqueline Buckley in 24:51. Finishing fifth for Island Trees and 22nd overall was Samantha Cranmer in 29:53. In its fifth and final league meet and only dual meet of the season, the Island Trees Lady Dawgs narrowly defeated Clarke by a score of 27-30. Cross Country scoring is based on place with first place being one, second place being two and so on, so like golf, it is low score that is the winning score. Michelle Duffy was once again first for Island Trees and first overall in a time of 20:35. Francis Zuniga and Jade Coyle finished second and third and third and fourth overall in 23:14 and 23:21. Jacqueline Buckley was fourth for Island Trees and seventh overall in a time of 24:34. Samantha Cranmer was fifth for the team in a time of 29:14. The Cross Country team finished its league meet season with a record of 6-4.
It was a great job by the boys' eighth grade Soccer team in their 5-0 win over Mattlin. Excellent plays were made by Mike Pascale, Piero Neyra, Nick Alavanja, Mike Gronenthal, Conor Reilly, J.T. Famularo, Anthony Leonick and Kevin Fainer and Sebastian Papasavastos in net.
The girls eighth grade Soccer team defeated Seaford 3-0. In the first quarter, Nicole Pellegrino made a terrific throw-in which then Maggie Milonakis scored. Colleen McKenna helped assist our next goal made by Allie Merrill. Our last goal of the game was made by Bridget Vilbig with the help of Jessica Campsi. Excellent defensive saves were made by Katie Steinwall, who played goal in the second quarter of the game.
