At the Sept. 5 Levittown Board of Education meeting, Levittown Superintendent of Schools Dr. Herman A. Sirois informed the board and community that the New York State Comptroller's Office has informed the Levittown School District that it will honor the district's request for a state audit of its budget and finances. The comptroller's office indicated that the audit should begin sometime in the fall. The notice of the impending state audit was greeted with enthusiasm by the members of the board of education and by the superintendent.

Upon learning that the 2006-07 budget had been over-expended by $3 million the Levittown Board of Education and Dr. Sirois had requested an audit of the district by the state comptroller's office, in order to verify the district's findings relative to the issue, and to help restore community confidence in the school district's finance.

Responding to the comptroller's decision to honor the district's request for an audit, Dr. Sirois said, "This is great news for our district. Several community groups had joined the district in seeking an audit by the state, and I'm sure that they will welcome the opportunity to have the state verify our findings."

Expressing the hope that the state audit would help restore public confidence in the school district's finance, Dr. Sirois added, "While we believe the errors that led to over-expenditures in the 2006-07 budget were isolated, and that these errors have been corrected, it is important for the community to be assured of these findings by an independent audit such as this."

Dr. Sirois closed his comments by reassuring the school board and community that the district's finances remain very strong, and that the measures being taken to correct the prior errors will not have any adverse effect on the school district's tax levy.
