On Wednesday, June 13, the Nassau County High School Baseball Coaches Association held its annual dinner to celebrate the 2007 baseball season. This night turned out to be a tremendous one for the Island Trees High School Varsity Baseball team, under the direction of Mr. Joseph D'Auria. The Varsity Team, which finished with a record of 24-3-1 not only won the League "A4" Championship this season for the ninth time in team history, but also won the Nassau County Class "A" Championship for the second time in six years.
First basement, Joe Vaskas and pitcher, Matt Gelormino won All-County awards. Joe Vaskas was also named as the "A4" League MVP. Third baseman Dave Darcy, catcher Paul DelGiacco, pitcher Dan Hart and Joe Vaskas were selected All-Conference. Second baseman Dan Fazio, and outfielders Shaun Rutherford and Bryan Verbitsky were named All-League. Outfielder Frank Baglivo was named as the Nassau County Playoff class "A" MVP.
Additional accolades were also bestowed upon two outstanding seniors who were part of this varsity squad. Pitcher Dan Hart was the recipient of the Capozzi Award, which is presented to an outstanding Scholar-Athlete from Nassau County each year. The award for the top player in Nassau County was presented to senior Joe Vaskas. The Diamond Award is the most prestigious award presented at this dinner.
With all of these accomplishments it is easy to see why Coach Joe D'Auria was selected not only as Nassau County League "A4" Coach of the Year, but also as Nassau County Class "A" Coach of the Year. During his tenure as varsity coach, Coach D'Auria's hard work and dedication, both on and off the field, has been monumental in producing this highly effective team of fine young men who comprise the Island Trees High School Varsity Baseball team.
