The Island Trees Board of Education elected Kenneth Rochon as president for the 2007-2008 school year, and Patricia Mahon was elected vice president. Carl Bonsignore and Peter Ray were re-elected this year.
At its reorganization meeting on July 9, the newly-elected board members were sworn in by attorney Randy Glasser of the firm Guercio & Guercio, the new legal counsel for the board. Superintendent James Parla reviewed highlights of the upcoming school year, including the introduction of two new school principals, Roger Bloom, who was appointed principal of the Island Trees Memorial Middle School, and Penny Fisher, who was appointed principal of the J. Fred Sparke Elementary School. Parla praised the members of both search committees, comprised of parents, teachers and administrators. Bloom is currently assistant principal at the Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset and Fisher is currently assistant principal at the Stanley D. Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School in Farmingdale. Both principals will begin work in Island Trees in August.
Superintendent Parla announced that the board of education will present a Capital Plan to the community toward the end of the summer. The Capital Plan consists of many projects required to maintain the district's buildings and grounds. The core of the plan includes projects that will be funded by the district's EXCEL aid, special state aid allocated to school districts for capital work. Additional projects are part of the whole plan.
The members of the board look forward to working closely with the district administrators, staff and parents to continue to offer the best educational programs possible while still trying to keep the school taxes as low as possible.
