To help homeowners take full advantage of the many property tax exemptions that he administers, Board of Assessors Chairman Harvey Levinson brought the Department of Assessment's office operations to the Levittown School District on June 20 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Wisdom Lane Middle School.
The property tax exemption outreach program is the first of its kind in Nassau County whereby the Department of Assessment will utilize specially configured laptop computers that will be linked to the county's database and enable staff to process applications (for Basic and Enhanced STAR, Veterans, Senior Citizen, Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers, Limited Income Disability, and Home Improvement) on-site.
"As part of my ongoing effort to improve department operations and making county government more accessible to homeowners, I have worked closely with our Information and Technology personnel for the past year to develop a mobile office," stated Assessor Levinson. "Homeowners will no longer have to endure the frustration of trying to find an accessible parking space at the county office building to file their exemption applications."
Levittown was the first in a series of property tax exemption forums that will be conducted throughout Nassau County. Depending on school availability, Assessor Levinson announced that five major tax exemption forums are tentatively planned for homeowners in Massapequa and Elmont (July), Manhasset (August), and Valley Stream (September). In addition, smaller venues are being planned at public libraries and senior centers. Locations and schedules will be announced in the media and online at the Department of Assessment's Website ("mynassauproperty.com") during the remainder of the year.
"The property tax exemptions I administer have helped tens of thousands of homeowners save millions of dollars off their property tax bills," concluded Assessor Levinson. "I urge homeowners to take full advantage of my mobile office operations. There are no processing fees and my staff will be happy to help homeowners fill out their applications."
