Each year, the Levittown Community Council recognizes a middle school student who has exhibited extraordinary participation in volunteer activities. Michelle Lambert of the Island Trees Middle School is this year's selection.
Michelle was honored by the members of the Community Council recently at Levittown Memorial Education Center during its monthly meeting at which her parents and other family members were present. She received a certificate of appreciation, a $50 savings bond, flowers and various citations from elected officials, New York State Senator Kemp Hannon, Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne Sr. and Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes.
Letters requesting one nomination from each middle school in Levittown and Island Trees are sent to district administrators in February by the Junior Volunteer of the Year Committee Chairwoman, Eleanor Walsh. Nominations are reviewed by the Council's Board of Directors and the winner is notified in April.
Lambert was recognized for the commitment she made to volunteering her time and services to the community of Levittown through her participation in events and extra-curricular activities at the Island Trees Middle School.
She was nominated by her teachers Suzanne Mercer and Christine Koester, who wrote that "[Michelle] is an asset to our community and a role model to all."
They cited Michelle's involvement with the Family Community Center Leaders of America Club for the past four years, fundraising for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Alliance for Autism Research Program as well as fundraising efforts on behalf of a local family whose home and belongings perished in a fire and on behalf of another family whose two sons were stricken with leukemia and for her role in the school's Adopt A Family Program.
The Levittown Community Council's certificate commemorates all of Michelle's accomplishments and commends and thanks her for the work she has done. It reads: "Your efforts and acts of kindness are an example of the spirit the Levittown Community Council wishes to encourage in Levittown residents and those who have a stake in our community."
