Despite high winds and intermittent deluges of rain, the Levittown 60th Anniversary Antiques and Collectibles Road Show was a tremendous success. The weather on April 15 kept some people away, judging from the phone calls received for days after requesting if the event was postponed, but those who braved the elements enjoyed an afternoon of enlightenment and community activity.

More than 80 people arrived at Levittown Hall to have art work, silver, jewelry, vases, dolls, china, flags, pottery, books and assorted other heirlooms and collectibles, suspected of having historical or monetary significance, appraised.

Participants were limited to two appraisals per person and the certified appraisers Babette Cohen, Sandra deQuillfeldt and Edward Lewand were kept busy throughout the day.

Were there surprises? Indeed there were on both the positive side and the negative side, but the appraisers were able to speak to the history of most of the items and kept participants entertained and informed.

The appraisal event was part of the Levittown 60th Anniversary calendar of events during 2007. Upcoming events include a Swim-A-Thon followed by Levittown Community Council's Lazy Days of Summer Picnic on Saturday, July 14; a historic bike tour on Sept. 8; a parade on Sept. 30 (changed from Oct. 7) and a dance on Nov. 3.

Individual, family and group sponsorships are available beginning at $25. Imprinted ceramic mugs at $5, baseball caps and T-shirts, both at $10, are also available and a CD of folk music written and recorded by Levittown resident Bob Koenig giving tribute to Levittown ($10) are also available for sale. All proceeds from the sales and sponsorships support 60th anniversary events, advertising, printing and related expenses.
