The Island Trees High School Varsity Baseball team made history on Wednesday, May 30. The Bulldogs defeated the Clarke Rams by the score of 9-5 and thus completed a sweep in the County Finals to capture its second Nassau County Championship title in team history.
The last came in 2001. Starting pitcher Dave Darcy picked up the win by gutting out four innings and scattering six hits and four earned runs. Darcy's overall record on the mound this year is 5-0. Frank Baglivo had a tremendous game, going three-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored. Baglivo's catch in deep centerfield off the bat of Clarke's Joe Martino was a turning point in the game. Dan Fazio continues to be one of Nassau County's hottest hitters by going two-for-five with an RBI and run scored.
Paul Manganiello stayed hot by going two-for-four including a double and a triple. With no outs and one on in the bottom of the fifth, Joe Sorisi entered the game and completely dominated the Clarke offense the rest of the way. Sorisi went the final three innings to nail down the save and county title for Island Trees. He went three innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out five and walking none.
It has been a tremendous run for the Bulldogs and it continues as Island Trees takes on the Suffolk Champions, the Islip Bucs for the Long Island Championship. The winner moves on to the New York State semi-finals in Binghamton.
