On Wednesday, May 2, Steve McQuail, a senior pitcher for the MacArthur Varsity Baseball team, became the first MacArthur pitcher in 13 years to pitch a perfect game.
All 21 batters who came to the plate for Bellmore JFK were retired in order, perhaps the most difficult feat one can accomplish in baseball. Steve was dominant from the beginning, mowing down batter after batter with a wicked combination of sizzling fastball, baffling knuckle-drop, and moving cutter. He struck out 13 batters and allowed only two balls to leave the infield. The MacArthur defense also helped Steve earn his perfect game, as leftfielder James Sanacore made a difficult running catch in the third inning and third baseman Dan McDermott recorded an out on an outstanding bare-hand catch and throw of a slow roller in the fourth inning. Mike Puka, playing first base, dug out the throw and ended Bellmore's last attempt at a base runner. The final score was 9-0 for the Generals, as the offense was led by Chris D'Arpa, who had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
