With no major items to be discussed at the May 8 Levittown Board of Education meeting, the BOE was busy recognizing both students and parents for their hard work and strong contributions to the school district this year.

Ten MacArthur and Division Avenue students were honored for their achievements as part of the 2007 SkillsUSA competition, which all Career and Technical students in the Levittown district are registered for. The event has students compete on both a regional and statewide level in areas such as cosmetology, carpentry, engine servicing, criminal justice and much more.

Regional winners from the competition held at SUNY Farmingdale were Richard Sculco (first place), Anthony Colombo (second place) and Marissa Oronce (second place) all from MacArthur. Division Avenue regional awardees were Giuseppe Di-Vanna (second place), Rose Petrofsky (second place), and Andrew DiDio (third place).

Petrofsky also became the district's first-ever National Delegate winner and will attend Nationals in Kansas City, MO in June.

The New York State Competition was held in Syracuse, and had six winners, including from MacArthur: Samantha Brady (first place), Derek Feneck (second place), and Sculco and Colombo who doubled as regional winners, as well. Division Avenue state winners were Courtney Rosario (first place) and Adam Fisk (third place).

Where there are great student accomplishments come great feats from parents as well. The Citizens Advisory and PTA Council for Budget Committees, along with the Food Service Committee were both honored. Thirty-three parents in total comprise these committees, with Lisa Vanderburg and Maria Emeric doing double duty on Citizens Advisory and PTA Council.

With a postponed Curriculum Report due to Levittown not receiving state report card statistics from the state yet, and no Public Be Heard to speak of, the meeting went quietly into the night, but not without some big news about the superintendent.

"We would like to congratulate Dr. Sirois on the birth of his second daughter," Board President Gina Interdonato announced. Dr. Sirois' daughter came home from the hospital on Monday, May 7.

The next regular meeting is slated for Wednesday, June 13 at 8 p.m. at Levittown Memorial Education Center. For more information log on to www.levittownschools.com.
